To every good thing there is a bad effect. The effect of helping third nations to get in debt is hate. This hate accumulates and the result will be similar to the bubble exodus. This the modus operandi of capitalism - whoever holds the bag

There are two sides of reality: the poor and the rich. This fantasy makes the richer side feel better about the poor. Don't go asking the other way around.

No amount voting down can change the fact that economics is another form of war nowadays. The North American empire thrives at the moment, as the Romans did some time ago. But who wins the global world is yet to be seen.

Like everything in capitalism, third world improvements is just an investment. The debt is due already for some nations and soon the next batch will follow the "debt settlement". Look around yourself in your country. Are people good enough

We hopefully find it rather soon. The modern form of investment bankers capitalism is not what should be considered the best of our ability as society.

Don't be so optimistic. The globalization project hasn't ended yet. Who will control the world is to be seen. And whether the nations will be left with the wealth they had acquired is as clear as the Libyan's future at the moment.

I like reading PG's essays but this one is a nonsense to me. What we (people) don't like about the rich is not their ability to make money, but their ability to corrupt the gvmt and screw the poor. All in the sake of more money.

This is definitely a change in the startup scene. If successful, other incubator will start copying it, making the whole experience better for founders. Good stuff.

It's a bit of a stretch to say they solved it. I'm not on FB and so FB to me don't matter. On the other hand, I'm part of an Active Directory of my company, so AD solves this problem for me at work. But none of them guarantee that the email

From what I gather skimming through the paper, you should be more concerned comparing HyperDex to Riak, than to Cassandra or MongoDb. The potential use cases seem to be quite different for the last mentioned.

Maybe. On the other hand, which risks we estimate properly? What if humans are incapable of properly estimating risks, especially related to themselves? It all comes down to the ability to predict future, and we are really bad at it.

In every serious development the db architecture gets selected on the use cases specific to the business, so without describing which use cases HyperDex addresses there will be no real interest for it, name it 2.0 or "on steroids".

We would be able to reason if we had the other historic outcome for the comparison. But since we don't, we go with the "winners don't get judged". So, as usual, the whole debate will be solved with brute force and whoever wins will get the

To the program participants: are these 40000 USD meaningful for doing a startup there? Is it like living on noodles or better/worse?

Your comment makes a lot of sense, much more than many comments above you. I can only add that managers at BigCo want to cover their ass first and only then do the job. And how you gonna cover your ass when you 'try before you buy'?

Why focus on client vs. webserver communication layer? Think about using websockets between your app and database api. REST wouldn't do there, but websockets opens up new opportunities for dynamic languages.

Governments get sick when they hear 'freedom' in any form, especially if they cannot shut it up at will. So be prepared to more fighting over the years, as the stake - the amount of free Internet users - grows every year.

Can anybody share any "Aha!" moments coming from crunching big data? It would be interesting and useful to know how you went from theory to actual validation, especially if the result couldn't have been obtained any other way. Thanks
