Looking at the worldwide list it seems like access to healthcare plays a really strong part... which I guess makes sense if you're calling your metric "Livability"

Tom Hanks is a talented actor that went on to produce/direct - I think a very fair comparison would be someone like Paul Buchheit. I'm not going to go around asking, but I think it's safe to assume my sample would have no idea who he is. Th

Update: I asked some people in my office if they've heard of Mark Zuckerberg - 100% had and could identify him as 'the facebook guy.' Same question with Sergey Brin and Larry Page - crickets.

That last category is really telling. Successfully integrating your tastes into the user experience seems to elude pretty much all music players that make a go at it (excluding Pandora, which does exclusively that.) I think this is largely

The mobile app does have the "artist radio" function, but there's still some kinks that need to be worked out of it (goes for desktop and mobile) There's also "recommendations" which I assume uses the same data to provide 1:1 recommendation

/r/ is, I think, the defining quality of reddit - it's a very elegant solution to the (x) is turning into (y) problem. /r/truereddit is already a pretty strong contingent of people pining for 06 reddit. But when all the cool redditors start

I expect we'll have to agree to disagree on this, but there's a case to be made that it objectively damages you. Consider this question on Quora: http://www.quora.com/Why-did-DuckDuckGo-block-Mahalo-com You are one of the closest concei

Social/crowdsourced companies do this all the time, they just don't have such sophisticated software. But that's hardly an inconceivable jump - I would certainly not be surprised to see a number of in-house versions of this at work all over

Jason: don't take this as a personal attack, but proofreading is your friend. I know you're a busy person, but it seems like more often than not I have to reread your copy because you didn't.

Fine with me - everything gets spin-friendly nicknames in the media, it's just apalling when that's allowed to be absorbed into the system itself. What really bothers me is that the lines separating media, commerce, and legislation have bee

Who downvoted this? That's not cool. Asking for an explanation is always ok. Anyways, Yuri Milner (with Ron Conway) recently announced a blanket offer to all YC companies: $150k in no cap convertible debt. The title could have been to a sto

Do you publish response rates? Things like this always scream selection bias to me. If it were, say 90/7/3, but it took 300 interactions to get 100 responses, that seems like a misrepresentation. That being said - I really appreciate the i

In many ways, I think that's already what it is. HN was created to, and still does, serve the purposes of YC. I don't know where the money comes from to keep it up and running, but I would imagine it's part of the YC operating budget. In sh

I was under the impression that the only way to use "broad" non-pejoratively is in reference to the actual breadth of something. That being said, sometimes it's safer to study abroad from afar.
