This is exactly why containers took off for self-hosters. Installing Plex went from a blog post to `docker run plex` (ok there is a little more nuance than that but you get my point). Docker allowed me to be far more competent on a Linux bo

It's clear to read, I like this one overall. Simple. But it would benefit greatly from search.

Absolutely Amen. Thank you. A list of my open source contributions include co-founding Linuxserver.io, the Self-Hosted podcast, blogging extensively about open source software (blog.ktz.me) and work for Red Hat. I say this not to be 'l

They don't? I just ran Cinebench R20 and Unigine Heaven benchmark plugged and unplugged (10x each) and got the same scores each time. This is the 16" MBP with the 5600m with HBM2 memory.

I have literally used Linux as my daily desktop driver at work for 6 years and counting. I'm not saying it can't be a great experience if you have a well defined use case such as development. But for an all-round, no compromises e

I recently purchased a 16” MBP despite significant personal concerns over the future of MacOS, being a strong open source advocate and Linux paying my mortgage. I did this ultimately for a few reasons. MacOS lets me run Adobe (Photoshop, Li

I feel you're unfairly conflating a 50+ year stable industry with relative job safety vs a decade of flash growth in a brand new industry.

Multi-monitor works well for me but I have one annoying issue which is that one line of pixels bleeds over the edge of one monitor into the next.

Any chance the website could show a screenshot or something? It’s just a generic thing right now and I have no interest in signing up to something I can’t see.

You could definitely achieve this with a whole plethora of tools like Terraform, packer and some kind of CI. But at some point you have to draw a line and ask what is ‘good enough’ for homelab. For me, that line is drawn at hand installatio

You can only run a certain number of pods per node before the kernel craps out. Depending on your K8s version somewhere in the 250-500 range. Admittedly, this is unlikely to be an issue at home lab levels. Therefore one must suspect the “be

Don't forget org-roam!! I swear all these other folks trying tool x, y, z are only doing so because they haven't found org. It's a bit cryptic to get started but totally worth the effort.

Check out org-roam. It does have the emacs string attached but I've been using doom emacs with it (for vim keybindings) and the learning curve is 100% worth it. 3 weeks in and I haven't looked back here.

Apart from the learning curve org-roam is the answer. I’m on week 2 with it and I can hardly sleep I’m so excited by how it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for.

I tried out Obsidian in the closed beta and also Roam Research before ending up learning org-roam as part of org-mode in emacs. I won't deny there is a heck of a learning curve with org-mode but once you make the jump I doubt you'
