I remember looking into this and being surprised it was controversial when DHH (lol) got up on a soapbox about how flossing was a scam promoted by Big Dental.

Be realistic, not a single person will suffer consequences for continuing to say "white space".

Why didn't you like it? I thought it was pretty universally loved. This is the first I've heard someone express disappointment.

I'm going to take this opportunity to plug the excellent documentary Life Itself - about Ebert. It really makes you appreciate the mark he left on film criticism and the industry in general.

The last sentence describes the band Rush for me. Three such incredible musicians coming together to make meh music.

This would imply that the confidence interval around the coefficient in a logistic regression is not a very useful concept, which I don't think is true.

I was so happy to see this mentioned. I'm on book 8 which is shaping up to be my favorite so far. I wanted a new epic series after Hyperion, so this has been the year of Malazan!

The Act of Killing - it's hard to even describe the premise. Its a present-day (2012) profile on participants in the 1960s mass killings in Indonesia. An absolutely brutal look into human nature.

+1 for Vietnam. And Jazz. And The West. There is something about starting a Ken Burns series that is super relaxing, and releases the pressure to find the "perfect thing" to watch for the next 10-20 hours. Vietnam is particular

Not to mention the auto complete that comes with RStudio. Is there any way to get equivalent functionality in Jupyter?

I'm glad someone else got on this soap box today. Folks will bend over backwards to justify the U-3 rate when it's not that meaningful at all.

Andrew Gelman's blog is fantastic and always happy to see it on HN. I don't have the link handy, but the HN crowd would love his critiques of Why We Sleep.

Well thats the whole point of the debt book. Taking that progression and poking holes in it. IIRC, Graber suggests that physical money came in too play when kings needed to levy armies.
