I also have no interest in using Yahoo, but my (Japanese) wife loves using the Japanese-language version to browse news, etc. I wonder if they are making most of their money in Japan.

I use (and enjoy) Mint, but have to agree wholeheartedly with this post. In some ways, it's close to something which I could recommend to non-technical friends and family. But not yet. I hope that future releases will focus more on t

I've tried using Krita before, and it sure didn't seem like a "Photoshop killer" to me.

Sigh. More new stuff to learn when I need to help people with their Windows boxes. How long can these guys go on releasing new operating systems? And how long will people keep buying them?

WOW!!! I just applied this to the (big) PNG sprite files used in a project I am working on now, and the gains in file size were amazing! And with hardly any difference in quality! Who ever said that reading Hacker News was a productivity dr

I think oDesk is a great work platform, if you don't bother competing with the crowd on price and just go for the best jobs (after getting some good feedback and building up a good profile). I bill $40-50/hr and have no problem ge

And the "high-performance" only really matters in inner loops. There's no reason why a programming language/development platform can't offer the best of both worlds: the ability to write fast code where it matters (

Should I stop believing Malcolm Gladwell? This title was a non sequitur for me, as I have never heard of Malcolm Gladwell and so never started believing him. Interesting article though.

You don't need to live in a metropolitan area. If you're good, you can make 6 figures freelancing on oDesk (et al), and without working crazy hours.

Find your own (remote) freelance consulting jobs, live wherever you want. In our industry, there's no reason why work and residence need to be coupled together.

Personally, I found the abbreviated names made the piece even more hilariously irreverent than it already was. "Izzy" for Isaac Newton? Makes him sound like an 1980's heavy metal star or something.

This whole thread of discussion seems irrelevant to me. The article is obviously not intended to provide a rigorous treatment of relativity. It is not meant to derive relativity from first principles. It is not even meant to be accessible t

I don't know what to do about your startup dilemma. It would have been wise to set a deadline (and communicate that to your partners) at the very beginning; hopefully you can do that next time. If you do leave, you said you "don't want to w

Just to throw in my 10 cents, if I've learned one thing in my own web dev consulting, it is... WORK FOR PEOPLE WITH MONEY. LOTS OF IT. It makes all the difference in the world.

I guess that depends on which "classical" algorithmic problems he is referring to. The field of "algorithms" is like an infinite sea which will never be fully explored; there will always be more algorithmic problems for which no library is

How much of my time is spent on algorithmic problems? Not as nearly as much as I would like! I once wanted to stay away from web development because I knew a lot of it would be boring stuff like learning to work around browser bugs (which c

"I hate choosing compression settings" -- but you don't have to. Diaz has shown in this thread, that a free, open-source encoder can automatically choose settings for you which work better than Beamr's.

If that is so, show examples of video files which prove it! Show us some uncompressed video files which compress both smaller and with better quality using Beamr (as compared to x264's CRF mode).

bjornsing, I think you might not understand what Diaz is doing. He is not manually tuning the parameters for each video file. He is actually letting x264 automatically choose the bitrate and encoding parameters, to achieve a desired lev
