I've been watching Lanyrd for a while now, and I think it has great potential. Anything that can bring some sort of order to the world of conferences would be a great thing - just ask any academic that needs to be on dozens of mailing lists

I really just wish that meme would die a graceful death. It was amusing at first, but hundreds of examples later, not so much.

Hey I just noticed this comment - thanks, I'm going to check out the authors you mentioned.

Could you recommend some of these other writers? Because I quite liked The Alchemist, though I'm dubious of some of Paulo Coelho's philosophical ideas at times.

Seconded, this is an excellent summary. I've tried many on this list (mainly use LyX), but a few I hadn't come across.

Just to add, the authors themselves note that "this is an observational study and cannot establish cause and effect."

Meh. You don't need too many fancy tools. The ones that got me through my PhD were: - LyX ( http://www.lyx.org ) for my thesis/conference papers etc. It's the greatest tool available for preparing any document longer than six pages and that

I'd go even further and say get a PhD only if you want to be a professor. If you just want to work on interesting projects in industry, a Masters degree might be a better RoI. Also consider the increased difficulty of re-entering the commer

I would highly recommend taking the time to learn LyX [ http://www.lyx.org ] rather than LaTeX itself unless your dissertation will contain a lot of equations. LyX is now a pretty mature piece of software that makes working with LaTeX ver
