Absolutely. 90% of the time I hear about SEO is via spam submitted via my contact form. As you say, that is unfair to the people doing good work, but also completely… fair… for me to make that association

The author is a YC partner, so it almost automatically gets up-votes for that. (He’s right, but so are you — it’s hardly newsworthy.)

Yes, and his blog’s title uses an ASCII straight quote in lieu of an actual apostrophe. Before that, Posterous’ default template had tiny, light grey, non-subpixel-antialiased text for body copy. It was excruciatingly hard to read. I never

I’m not sure you understood what he meant by “good.” > The opposite of good is bad. The opposite of nice is unlikeable. That’s still a little vague. “Good” can mean “skilled” (as I think you interpreted it), but he actually means “hon

Apologies for the self-promotion, but at NoRedInk, we are funded, have traction, and are hiring while improving the status quo of grammar education.

I did not miss that. If a lot of the data in question is in the form of sparebundles, mp3s, and/or video — for me, it would be — then good luck meaningfully de-duplicating and compressing that.

This is absurdly expensive. If you have a 400GB laptop, fully backed-up and with negligible deltas, you are paying $1440 a year. (400GB is not an absurd amount, either. I personally would ideally have about that much in my off-site backup.)

Notice how all his "similarities" (minus twitter follower counts!) pit common and painful pratices from 1999 with demos from the modern day. Seriously. Demos! Which means that, no, we have not actually regressed into 1999. Elegant trollin

Well, the oldest I had called “Kids’ Rave Book Reviews” — KRBR for short — and I had started off what I vaguely hoped to be a community project by posting my review of The Ear, The Eye, and the Arm, which I had just re-read in sixth grade

No, you’re saying that filtering people == having a call to action. That is a false equivalency. I’m also not sure if you are attempting to attack me for only discussing Google. Of course I consider my criticism to be broad enough to apply

So, there’s a semantic trick here. Technically, when an AdSense client targets their ads only to North American users who expressed an interest in <certain medication>, Google didn’t “sell that user’s personal information,” but… w

My first actually-online website was on Angelfire. I’ll never see it again, because: 1. It was auto-deleted after a period of inactivity, 2. The Wayback Machine doesn’t know about it, and 3. My local copy was deleted by Microsoft thanks to

Interesting! Sounds like we have different dispositions. For me, making money is a much more conscientious endeavor. (It’s spending that is automatic.) I think my main motivations here on HN are to learn and to inform — although maybe I’m j

My understanding is that you can use e.g. "rel=canonical" links to tell bots what the indexable URL of the current page is. Other tools in the box include UA sniffing and sitemap.xml.

The material you quote is confusing, but what Stack Overflow and GitHub do that Markdown does not define is allowing auto-linking of URLs without the angle brackets. That is, http://ajh.us/ on SO or GH is the same as < http://ajh.us
