You have to have a Microsoft account (as opposed to just a local account) linked to your machine. Then you'll be able to do the Windows Insider thing, and also switch between Fast/Slow Rings.

I switched away from a 2016 MBP w/Touch Bar. Switched to a Dell XPS (9560). For the curious, here are the specs and price: MBP: 2.9GHz i7, 16GB, 2TB NVMe, Radeon Pro 460 4GB GPU - $4299 XPS: 2.8GHz i7 (Kaby Lake), 32GB, 1TB NVMe, Nvidi

I know this is the opposite of the question you asked, but I'm in this spot and I hoped my answer might be interesting. I'm literally going the other direction. I've got a sysadmin background, with little coding experience. G

Most clients pay for you to solve a business problem for them. Assuming you're sticking within legal/ethical confines, the how of how you get from problem to resolution is immaterial to the client. As others have said, find some

I'd been a hardcore Mac user since '04. The best thing Microsoft and Dell have going for them in the laptop space... the 2016 MacBook Pro w/Touch Bar. It was a dud. The GPU issues were the final straw for me. I thought that s

In case the context didn't make it obvious... I know that VS is based on, and can do compilation for C/C++. I was saying basically, "Oh cool. You can do VS compilation of C/C++ for Linux now. Do you plan in introducing

Thanks for the downvote guys. I wasn't born under a rock. The article was talking about Windows Subsystem for Linux , and my comment was that VS can do C/C++ for Linux . I thought that was implied by the context. Anyways, I know

So VS can do C/C++ compilation now. I wonder if they will extend VS to work with other higher-level languages like Ruby and Python (et. al.) ? It would be nice to work from Windows but build for Linux that way, for other languages too.

The Touch Bar is gimmicky, for sure. The only useful feature (in my opinion) is Touch ID. Otherwise it's an unnecessary battery drain. Why did I switch? It boils down to this: after 13 years of being a hard core Mac user, it feels like

Why not both? The more side work you do, the more extra income you can earn. The more you learn, the more marketable skills you'll have to offer your clients? I don't think it's an either/or proposition. I think it'

Was a 2016 15” MBP w/Touch Bar (max specs), and macOS. It's on the shelf now. Now it's the new Dell XPS 15” (9560) (max specs), and Windows 10 - Fast Ring.

I use Freshbooks. It might not do all you need, but it handles most of it. It's not open source, but they are trustworthy, and reputable. It's a paid subscription service.

It seems interesting to me, how often books about C++ are mentioned in there. 5 of 30 listed I say that, because it seems like people like to talk bad about C++ as if it's terrible language (rather than just another tool in the toolbox

Interesting. It's fine for the government to collect data and spy on its citizenry (without disclosing that it's doing so), but if a company does it it means millions in fines? Smacks of rank hypocrisy, to me.
