While at it, lets eliminate "online business" cause what does that mean anyway? Having no offline store? And how can you "be a website" anyway? There are just "businesses with websites". Which is most businesses these days. Like Gap. G

yep, being able to jump to a date in the timeline is a good thing, but the weird collapsing and 2-pane layout is much too cumbersome. its actually a lot more usable on the iphone when you just have a single stream of posts.

its a new email platform to rival gmail, but we're stealth still so i cant disclose much. we'll be starting a beta pretty soon and issue an official press release at that stage - make sure you request an invite in the meantime.

Obviously email doesn't support seeing someone type, but SMTP is almost as fast as XMPP - sub 1 second doesn't really make a difference, it's usually IMAP that's the slow bit. Of course it's just as fast as XMPP if both sender and recipien

Email is a collection of protocols stacked on top of each other, so when we're talking about replacing email you have to be specific about which part you'd like replaced. DNS? SMTP layer? IMAP layer? application / email client layer? spam

It is real-time, it's just that current email clients aren't designed to be efficient, it's purely UI's fault. Again this is something we've fixed at post.fm, cant wait to show you guys.

yes that should be the way to go, not providing a library in lots of parts (i've yet to try it - how well does it work in practice?). compilers should handle this for you (linking in only the required functions) instead of distributing a l

In general I do agree with you, but there's also some truth to the argument that statically linking only the required dependencies is better than embedding a VM. In a way, this is the difference between CoffeeScript and Dart for client sid

An open / distributed alternative. Facebook today is like some initial proprietary version of email. Sooner or later, an open standard protocol for "sharing" and "social networking" (EMAIL + FOAF?) will take over. (And it has to be distr

I've got a collection of some decent domain names in case anyone's looking. Also interested to hear from anyone else who's got some premium domains in exchange for cash/equity. Here goes: - techlayer.com - marketglue.com - mailcake.com -

I also see ads that say "mom working from home earns $500 a day online!". If it was so easy to make "instant $50/month" then I'd just sit there and set up a new site every day for a year, and then retire. Truth is - there's no get-rick-qu

I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just a lot harder than a desktop-app, because there isn't a GUI toolkit with standard look & feel, functionality, and API. Web designers ultimately write one from scratch every time they need to cre

I completely agree. Of course stuff like Active Record can save a lot of typing for back-end code. But: 1) a large system often requires hand-crafted SQL anyway. 2) hand-crafted SQL performs MUCH better for anything but the trivial stuf

If this is for real, then why can't the same thing be done for music? Drum a beat, whistle a tune, sing a few notes - and let the software extract best-matching samples from a library of millions of songs.

What I find quite unfair is how everyone compares "lines-of-code" for a Java app vs PHP/Python/Ruby. IMO there's a big difference: A Java IDE like Eclipse probably writes half of the lines of source code for me - the tedious bits that are s
