How are joins verbose? It’s pretty straight to the point: combine these 2 tables on these columns… what do you want to remove to make it less verbose?

Composition is available in sql, but works a bit different than in a procedural language. In sql you express sets of data, composition consists of defining subsets that you compose into more complex sets. Views and CTEs are the tools for co

Hardly, often drugs treating same condition have different side effects, or different effect on patients. Physicians usually search for the drug that works best on a specific patient. Once you find a drug with the desired effect, it’s usual

Maybe we don’t need all those new drugs? Are they helping patients, or are they just slightly changed existing drugs that allow the industry to ask for more money?

You draw the line when the basic requirements for a free market aren’t available: transparent pricing, customers that have a choice between different providers, customer that actually have the time to shop around.

Do you have proof that non-profit health care does not work? I’d say there are plenty country that show proof that nonprofit health care works better for the majority of people then for profit health care.

How do you use that info? Validate that it’s using the correct data, or as info when writing a new app? I often wished I had the same when building something on top of sap/salesforce/any other app that would show the source of eve

Yes, having patents is expensive. Large corporations often file patents for defensive reasons, and for this they employ multiple patent lawyers full time.

That was also concluded by Hans Rosling: the higher the education of people, the fewer kids they have. Best way to address overpopulation is by increasing education worldwide. https://www.teesche.com/bookshelf/hans_rosl

Good engineers will accept lower payment if their costs are lower. Similar to how amazon is operating, by lowering costs, minimizing margin, they can win over customers and win the market.

That’s not how free markets/capitalism is supposed to work. Companies are expected to just shop around for the lowest price on the capabilities they need. Are you suggesting we should adopt something else then capitalism/free mark

I recently visited some teams in India, they indicated quite a few coworkers moved back to India to be closer to family and friends. Not everyone is dreaming about moving to the US. And yes, I agree that I couldn’t see myself living in Indi

Why would they move away from family and friends if they could get equal pay in India, with more spending power?

You could also argue that difference in pay is less discriminatory. You are paying employees to have the same quality of life, same type of housing, same opportunity to provide for family, send your kids to the same type of schooling. These

You also know that companies are looking to optimize margin, so those US level salaries are only temporarily. Given enough good people in India, or other low-income countries, that pay level will drop significantly.

The world is moving towards more closed borders, so moving is getting harder. But in the end we’ll all need to move to low-income countries like Yemen, Togo, and Ethiopia, to lower our costs, and be most competitive for employers?

Why are you supposed to pay based on abilities? Where is that stated? As a company you need certain abilities, and you pay whatever the market decides these abilities are worth, and nothing more. Depending on location, the market will set a

Also good to note that unlike many other forms of AI, the SQL query optimizer AI is not a black box. It will tell you exactly how it thinks your data can be retrieved in the fastest way if you ask it to explain its plan for your query.

Exactly, SQL is like a very specific natural language used to tell a database what data you need. The database contains AI (the query optimizer) that will use statistics to determine the fastest way to retrieve the data requested. Depending

Seriously? I just had a Quick Look at the mongodb docs, but when I see that I’m glad to use SQL. All the brackets and dollar prefixed expressions make mongodb queries hard to read.

Costs are another reason to optimize queries, long running, inefficient queries will be a lot more expensive on things like snowflake than more efficient queries.

That’ll often not scale to millions of records. Letting the database optimizer find the optimal execution path instead of doing it procedurally elsewhere might result in “finishes in 5 minutes”, versus “doesn’t fit in a night”.
