The goal is basically open. I would like to make this system good enough that I can spend most of my time on it. Without losing track of the original ideas. A package manager is definitely coming sooner or later. There's actually an SD

Totally agree about Windows GUI's and Unix CLI's. Sprinkle some MacOS on there and you have my vision for Serenity. All the fonts are hand-bitmapped by me, using the included FontEditor application. I was trying to construct the i

GNU's binutils and GCC have both been ported to Serenity and work right now. So not very far away at all! I got it working properly ~1 month ago, here's a video I posted that day: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lO

I don't have the money to spend on that sort of thing. I do have a dreamer Patreon for the project, but it's all very modest :) I'll continue iterating on the look though. Here's a more recent demo that shows a bunch of

You are absolutely right about the benefits of mimicking existing UI paradigms. It saves so much time already knowing basically how I want things to look and work. And not having to worry as much about resources as people did in the past is

You can actually see how much work the slider took, because I recorded the process :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMRJClRrGps I don't know if any two operating systems started out the same.. Serenity came into this

Hello friends, author here! Fun to see my project on HN again. If you would like to see the system in action, I did a demo video in March[1] and one in April[2]. I’m happy to answer any questions you might have about the system. I’m not an

I use QEMU every day for testing my new operating system: https://github.com/awesomekling/serenity QEMU has just the right mix of performance and hackability that I need for my "printf debugging" workflow :)

That's weird! Maybe it's some confusion between the PS/2 mouse and the PS/2 keyboard both using the same I/O port.. Does it help if you give it a little keyboard input before the mouse input? What OS are you running

Here's what I can offer right now: unpack this in serenity/Kernel/ and then run "./run" in the same directory. Or just start QEMU manually with qemu-system-i386 -kernel kernel -hda _fs_contents https:/&#x

Bash was one of the first 3rd party apps I got running so it's pretty good. No job control though, and it sometimes gets confused about signals and TTY stuff. Haven't tried the others yet. It would be fun to get an interpreted lan

Thanks. The design is mostly "discovered" through iteration. I tried making a few diagrams at one point but in a week they were already outdated, so I've given up on trying to document until things slow down.

Thanks! I didn't really have any big ideas starting out other than "I don't know what my computer is doing 99% of the time, what if I could drastically change that number?"

Thank you for these observations, you've just distilled my personal programming philosophy into three concise points! If you looked at the code, you would indeed find a similar "take what you like and leave the rest" style ma

Probably because pinging 127.0.0.1 is actually cheating. I don't have a loopback network interface inside Serenity, instead pinging "127.0.0.1" will go through QEMU's SLiRP backend, ping lo0 on my host machine and then p

Thank you for your kind words. I think the world has plenty of boastful OS developers already. I'm just someone having a good time programming. To clarify the repo history, the bulk of the codebase is from October 2018 forward, the one

Your observations are of course accurate: many parts of the system are indeed quite bare-bones. I've been trying to bring up a huge number of subsystems in parallel by building enough of the scaffolding and infrastructure in each area

Hey guys, I'm the author of this project. Surprising to see it on HN but life is surprising sometimes! I actually made a little demo video about this system just yesterday if you'd like to see it running: https://www.yo
