Moreso even than ageism, it's frustrating the way young and old struggle to exchange ideas. The young, I think, are to blame for not being interested. But the old need to come to terms with the possibility that the judgmental attitude

Anecdotes have value. Stories have value. Opinions can have value. Evidence is not a condition that necessarily drives change. Your total dismissal of the piece seems misguided.

I live in a town with an excellent, healthy food culture. The school lunches are terrible. The result is most everyone packs lunch for their kids. Eventually I hope to figure out why there hasn't been a movement to improve the lunches,

This is exactly the kind of thinking we need. Intense, local citizen involvement should be a great start (and should be default, anyway).

Related to my other comment, I think we need individual police to submit to, and eventually desire, continued intensive training on the topic of justice. Perhaps it can start in one town: fire all the officers that don't happily attend

I've been at a loss as to where to ask this question, so maybe HN will come through. Are there any sheriffs/prosecutors/cities doing innovative work to improve our justice system? I would think there must be someone out there

To be interrogated or detained (the pre-arrest stuff) is not benign. It is full of risk because police are sanctioned to use force on citizens. It is especially risky for non-whites, especially if they try to exercise their rights. This sto

What if being retarded and being highly intelligent aren't ends of the same spectrum? High intelligence seems much more situational than being retarded. A retardation is fairly objective and would stand out in almost any scenario, wher

Exactly. I've lived in and visited so many amazing places that are just ruined by the traffic. For the last 1+ years I'm living in a nice (not amazing) place with few traffic problems and it really just seems better. I'll sav
