I have a specific thing in mind, but I think I lack sufficient knowledge of what's out there to make the best trade off for my specific use case. To be honest, I lack basic knowledge of different system components. To give an example I

I don't know about your last paragraph. Continuing your assembly analogy, yes learning assembly helps you get a feel for what's happening under the hood, but does anyone learn assembly these days? Also in terms of energy consumpti

We have found unit testing not very useful because ultimately it's not a single component that generates errors but the interaction between many of them. Also the language we code in makes the first two things very difficult to enforce

I haven't read the article fully, but can anyone please explain why value types seem so much more complicated in the JVM than DotNet, where they have had it for a long time?

Coming from a math background and using latex a lot, ligatures were really godsend for me. Without ligatures code looks unnatural but it's just an aesthetic thing in the end and I don't mind either way

In terms of popularity I'd say Python>R>Julia R might be closest in syntax to how excel works, especially with the ifelse functions. R also has dplyr, which is unmatched in how it makes data manipulation easy and streamlined

It does everything I need to run to do my job. If intellij is doing more stuff that is slowing it down then maybe they can find a better performance-feature trade off by getting rid of the bloat
