But Nyxt (which is modeled on Emacs, not Vim) would blend in for me. I spend most of my time in Emacs and Firefox; I would prefer a browser that blends in. I don’t know about 50 applications. The rest of the applications I use are more spec

Text does not consume meaningful bandwidth, so a mesh network should allow IM. (You’d need to limit torrenting, video, and hi-res audio) Email and ssb can be supported by having a bicycle and a thumb drive.

Yeah, I only use it for “casting” videos to tv, not watching on the phone. This is all true for most content-focused apps: they are more usable as a website, which has possibilities of tabs, in-page search, deep bookmarks, … Apps, as a gene

Youtube apps can interact with TV Youtube apps, which are otherwise a pain to use. That’s the one reason I have it installed.

The book in the post is a single folio. A whole afternoon is an overstatement, I’d say.

Yet another point where Fish is a delight. Going to Python/whatever is not quite the same — shell scripts are not as much written as extracted from shell history, so switching to a separate language is a large extra step.

How do I get full-disk encryption on Linux without having to type a password twice on boot? This is not a surface-level issue you can solve at distribution / DE level, and it’s not the only one. A good pre-installed environment of curr

The content here is that they’ve: - Done the built-in tutorial; - Picked up somebody else’s Emacs and a few packages. That’s two hours, maybe, if you go slow and have a few beers in the meantime. I wonder what they did for the rest of the y

If you have a moment — why do you dualboot? I find it too difficult to keep both environments around, especially given how high-maintenance Windows can be with blocking updates and general junk accumulation. (or, if Windows is your primary

What did they do and what are the implications? Is that something that every phone company does (having their own kernel version and not sharing it)? Do others use modules? Does this make it possible to easily release a postmarketOS port fo

Yes. Containers are also fine. Synology’s added value disappears if that’s your primary mode of usage.

As I said, I do use Synology :) And iOS. So maybe not the best person to answer. Nevertheless, Nextcloud keeps offering to sync my photos, and I think it also does that on Android.

So they might still get their photos back. 240,364 photos is a lot, and none are replaceable. It’s still a lot of stress.

I own a Synology NAS, and now believe that it would have been easier to just set up a computer for the tasks I use it for. There are just too many cases where the solution is to use a container (and the clumsy web interfaces for reverse pro

The most Docker-shaped one is Podman. “Best” depends on what you do with it. I think the bigger issue here is not the lack of replacements, but the end of oh-so-convenient centralization in DockerHub.

I did, hence my other comment in this thread — proper dashes are easy. “--” can also be input on iOS by entering “- -” and then deleting the space. Or you can disable the “Smart punctuation” setting and type what you actually mean.

I find it unlikely that the comment was typed on a typewriter, or sent over a teletype. Computers and phones make it easy to type em-dashes if you want to do that. No sub-par alternatives are needed.
