This is true, not to mention a demo is obviously much more effective than an email introduction. I am not disputing the fact that YC's physical presence in the valley and your connections give you a big advantage with investors in the valle

I am not personally involved with Shotput Ventures, but I know that the people involved are fairly connected and I am sure would introduce startups to anyone who would provide funding including valley investors. Not to mention they are fina

I had a debate with pg over 5 months ago about how many startups from Atlanta seed fund Shotput ventures would stay back after the program was over. The program got over 3 weeks ago and as of now, three out of the eight startups are in Atla

I thought this might be bull so I googled it. Apparently the fact that these parasites affect human behavior is proven! How widespread this is is up for discussion. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/eid/vol9no11/03-0143.htm

Agreed. As an aside, I am impressed that someone who went to an IIT (and so had to do well in the most competitive exam in the world) sees the dark side of these tests. Interestingly, India just scrapped competitive exams for 10th grade (CB

Sridhar, do you have any links to more information about Zoho's University, the curriculum and so forth? I shared a very similar education experience (Engineering in India, Masters in the US) and ended up with similar sentiments about how u

LOL. That's awesome :D As an immigrant / entrepreneur trying every thing I can to legally work for my startup full time in the US, I'll seriously consider Canada if I fail.

I say this with some trepidation since I am not familiar with Directi first hand, but having seen their job ads once too often now, I would like to know what exactly are the "interesting things" they are doing? Based on their products page

Edit: Well, I totally misinterpreted what the author meant by "work at". This'll teach me to RTFA I guess. FWIW, GT's library does rock. They have quiet area as well as group areas and a great set of workstations as well. The only thing mis

Good point. I want to work for my own startup though so access to a large number of customers is more important to me. I don't yet know how this compares (the ease of finding new customers in Canada as well as traveling to the US as a Canad

Actually Canada actively recruits US immigrants. Send an email about H-1B visas using Gmail and soon you'll see an ad on the top saying something like "Stuck in an H1B visa? Canada will give you an expedited residency if you are a qualified

It's unlikely. Most democrats oppose this (protectionism) and many republicans oppose it as well (anti-immigration stance). It's lose-lose for immigrants.

I am jumping through hoops right now so that I can work for a startup based on technology I developed (that has already created 3 jobs). It's pretty frustrating.

It is not illegal to discriminate on the basis of immigration status. In fact "Sorry, we can't hire anyone other than citizens and permanent residents" is so common a response, it's usually part of the job ad itself.

Assuming, again, that the speculation that this was a forced sale is true, there could be any number of reasons for it - ranging from the simple (Sequoia needs a good exit in this bleak environment for their limited partners and don't have

Hate is just the wrong word to use. Do you think Sequoia had a personal dislike for Tony? Or do you think they just wanted to cash out earlier? Even the latter is speculation based on un-named sources, but assuming it's true - where does ha

Thanks, that makes sense. I have also found that wanting similar (or at least compatible) things from the startup is also essential. I tried to start my first real startup (one where we started writing code) with a friend from gradschool. W

A question that is not directly related: You said My initial goal is to figure out what kind of group I'm dealing with. Three friends about to graduate from college? Two colleagues who work together at a big company and want to jump ship?

Geopolitically, water may be important, but it is unlikely that a fair resolution to the water issue will resolve the Kashmir issue. Starting in 1947 during partition/independence both India and Pakistan have claimed Kashmir. Now it is a ve

Thank you for that link. I have been living life with a rather short sighted perspective of late due to dayjob+startup leaving me no time to breathe. I plan to change that in the near future and a bike is part of that plan :) These bags sho

Whatever you do Russ, if you make a switch, don't switch to another instance of startup+dayjob. I strongly believe it is that which is killing you. I have been doing that for a while and I constantly feel like I am cheating on one or more o

I never argued any of the points you refute. I merely pointed out that when you are poor (temporarily or not) and lack a car, you do end up paying more for stuff that you have to buy nearby.

I was once poor (grad school) and I can attest that the first point is valid. I didn't have a car, the grocery store was 3 miles away and the bus ran once a hour on weekdays and much less frequently on weekends - making it hard. 9 out of 10
