I've wanted a language like this. Java's checked exceptions with some way to offload the bookkeeping to the compiler. What about other run-time exceptions, like divide by zero? Are they checked? What about Hoare's billion-d

Interesting. I bought it when it was $20 and felt it was well worth it. I was worried when they dropped the price to $10 about the company going out of business. I guess there are probably better deals out there, but I'm happy to pay

I rarely do video calls. The thing I can't live without is SMS from my computer (via the Hangouts/Voice integration). Is there another good way to do SMS from a computer? Phone calls from my computer (with my own number) were ni

The article doesn't mention my biggest annoyance: "Hangouts video and voice calls don't work in Firefox for now. Google is working to fix this as soon as possible. Until then, use a different supported browser." It'

Wow. MM is really going all-in on for Software Guard Extensions (secure enclave) on the server. What does HN say? Do we trust Intel (motivation and implementation) that much?

I wrote a compiler extension to help me: https://github.com/abjennings/EnumAnalyzer It doesn't analyze the control flow or anything like that. It just looks for places where I throw a certain exception, then chec

Good question. Usually we consider "aggregation functions" with a fixed number of graders, N. It has been proven that if you want an aggregation function that is: - anonymous: all graders treated equally - unanimous: if all grade

Not actually equivalent to the median. If all the scores are 1s and 5s, then the median will be a 1 or a 5, but the average will be somewhere in between. The problem is slightly easier to understand if we consider the grading scale from 0 t

You make a good point, although personally my codebase is split into enough projects that I think the transition will be manageable. If it's just a compiler warning (and you don't treat warnings as errors) then can't you leav

I can see how that's unclear. That fiddle was supposed to be an example where I did exhaust all the options, so I shouldn't get a compiler error. In any case, to make the error go away, I add a "return null" or throw

If I add a "yellow" option to the enum, then I _want_ to get compiler errors (or warnings) about all the places in my code that need to handle that new case. That's what compilers are for, that kind of busy work. Is there a

Very excited about the Nullable Reference Types. Besides that, the feature I want most in C# is enum exhaustion checking. So I can write: enum Color { red, green, blue }; public static string SuperheroFromColor(Color c) { if (c

I played it out on lichess.org. After 47 moves, Stockfish sacrifices a bishop to keep the game going. I was wondering if it would repeat that 47 moves later, but it didn't. Settled for the draw.
