On iOS is't possible to ask the system to present a photo picker on behalf of the app without requiring a permission to look into your photos.

I meant something like SwiftUI, but as an abstraction over platform-native components like React Native. By Flutter/Native I meant Flutter ported to a language without garbage collection and with ability to easily call into C libraries

For that we’ll need an adequate cross-platform (-ish) way of doing UI. I’m not a fan of React Native, but it seems to be the technology we’re looking for, though it doesn’t seem to be as ready for the desktop yet. An all-native solution on

Theoretically, SGX allows you to assume that your data is in danger only if Intel and your service provider are cooperating in order to access it. SGX has had vulnerabilities before, and there are likely to be more, but it still seems like

You can pack more battery into a larger body. Speaking for myself, 15” is a comfortable size to write code on using a larger font, due to slight vision issues.

I wonder if anyone had success in running macOS VM on macOS via hvf acceleration. Would be a great free alternative to VMWare Fusion and Parallels.

From the description, it’s a pseudonymous network with publicly observable transactions. I get that Facebook doesn’t have the best track record in regard to privacy, but it’s not immediately obvious which exact aspect of privacy should we b

The core APIs are the same, so you get most things for free — file system, networking, media recording/playback, graphics, and more. Installation takes place before the app gets to run any code. Notifications are similar enough to be h

According to the relativity theory, it’s physically not possible to determine if you’re on Earth, or in a spaceship accelerating at 1 g, just by observing physical processes.

8-core CPU means that I can rebuild my code almost twice as fast. That's 8 minutes vs. 16. Doesn't make me laugh. I guess there's a reason it's "Pro".

I don’t think convergence is their current goal. UIKit is simply a more “modern” API for writing GUI apps. AppKit hasn’t been evolving much in the past decade.

Great news! But, looking at the iOS implementation, it seems that it severely affects performance. Might work for simple apps (but then again, so does React Native).

The biggest advantage of React Native is that it makes use of native UI. You won’t be able to embed a browser, or a performant video player into a Flutter app (on iOS, at least).

One can argue that automatic reference counting is a form of garbage collection. It is, however, deterministic and that’s why some engineers tend to prefer it.

Right, it’s a protocol with a reference implementation. It would just be nice to have a service with the kind of privacy properties this software provides on a mobile device where software distribution is very centralized and requires a tin

A possibility to blacklist users is essential for a messaging service to be able to respond to abuse requests. I wonder how Ricochet plans to handle it.

Banning federated networks is actually much easier than dealing with an important centralized entity like Facebook or Google. Just ban every node that provides access to illegal content.
