When I was tapering off a capsule med, I used to pull the two halves of the capsule apart, pour out a bit of the powder, and plug the halves back together. Not amazingly accurate I admit. But it shows that it's not impossible to disass

It would be a "rumour" if I had stated that it was the truth. If it's not the right explanation then fine, but I see no need for defensiveness. I mentioned that possibility not to criticise elastic, but because it's a se

Oh yeah. Given that MIPS supports both, I'd have thought most would be configured for little endian, but there are still currently supported MIPS big endian on openwrt.org

Oh, I don't know about that :-) If we are looking for the two scariest words, "intermittent failure" would be my candidate.

Wow I did not know that was still possible. Big-endian seems to be something of Thomasson[1] these days. I wonder if there is any real use case apart from testing code to see if it still runs on old machines. [1] https://en.m.wik

It's not even just code. I remember once writing a script to generate a large table, only to discover that GCC took forever to compile it as it appeared to have an n^2 time in the size of the file. That can't have been the optimi

It may not be used so much for clocks now, but you can still buy cheap timed power switches that use this method. For example: https://www.argos.co.uk/product/5440524

Yeah that's what happens in a normal alarm clock. The OP thinks the design of this one is broken, hence my comment. But some other commenters seem to have a good theory that it's a failure in a component

I've got a label printer that uses a battery because it needs more current than (pre-pd) USB, but needing a battery when you also have AC seems a poor design. Especially a non rechargeable one.

Sounds plausible. A the start of the photo era, the state of the art for illustrations was for them to be drawn by an artist and then engraved on a wood block, manually, that was then used as a printing plate. There was a period when no met

I devised a grammar for arithmetic expressions which is less readable than either standard or RPN notation. Basically, an arithmetic expression is a tree. Standard notation indicates the shape of the tree with brackets, RPN by listing the n

No, but property rights in inventions are supposedly justified by the idea that this publishing will enable implementations when the patent expires. In the software world that means engineers. I don't know what audience you have in min

The latter points are valid, but for the first - software engineers are usually best advised not to spend time looking at the patent database. For a long time (is it still true?) there were triple damages for knowingly infringing a parent

Your first scenario is plausible, the second I'm not sure about. Due to the growth rate central routers had a very fast replacement cycle anyway, and edge devices mostly operated at layer 2, so didn't much care about IP. (Maybe th

The GP's point is that if middle boxes couldn't rewrite the header, NAt would be impossible. And if NAT were impossible, ipV4 would have died several years ago because NAT allowed more computers than addresses.

IMO the OP has not understood the obviousness test. Its not that a person "skilled in the art" would never make the invention, but that it would require many attempts, thus justifying the reward of a patent for their efforts. Th
