Could you give a quick summary of how technology inevitably leads to loss of freedom? I understand that this is often the case, but is it always necessarily the case? Ie. Is it a universal law that "Technology leads to loss of freedom"?

The quotes are headed by the question "Why learn design?" This site doesn't have a monopoly on design, so I had no inclination to think they were endorsing the site.

The fonts look right for me (not like the other pics here) but I'm on Chrome 18 in Win7. Nice looking site.

Maybe it's a bit of both? Going IPO strictly to attract top talent seems a little naive, no?

Interesting, but it doesn't necessarily take into account the opportunity cost due to the very significant time investment. But more importantly, you know there's something wrong with the system when so many feel they have to try to justify

I'm curious where this came from. I wonder if it can also be broken into something like: [1] Public school: low, low and mid classes [2] Alternative school (private or public): upper mid class [3] Best private schools: elite With [2] and [

I'm interested in your thoughts here. Concerning a): I think there are very very few cases where calling someone a "loser" is a good choice of words -- I agree that Hawking's comment is most likely one of the cases where it is not a good ch

Do you disagree with the effort in trying to find the commonalities between high-performing people, or merely the stated results? I agree that they may not have the whole answer here, but it's a whole lot better than any random commonality

I believe the underlying idea in Hawking's comment isn't that people shouldn't boast, but it's that no information of value is conveyed in the act of boasting about one's IQ. This is due to an understanding that the IQ test does not (nor wa

There's so much misinformation about what the IQ test is for. It has become common understanding that it's a measure of intelligence (or ability, or potential), however it was never created for that nor ever intended to be that. In additi

Is that the case, or it sounds like from the other commentors here that it also represents the effectiveness and focus on fundraising? If instead people were given a single fundraising plea form with 2 checkboxes (one for academics, one fo

There has to be a connection between them. The athletics draw no resources from education, but how can this be so? Instead of increasing the budget of athletics, why can't the education budget be increased instead?

Sure these ideas sound pretty good (though I don't fully know what you mean by "cultural improvement" or "right connections"). Thousands/millions of people around the world are working towards a lot of these ideals. I'm not fully sure what

This is great. More professors need to be like you. With the exception of barely 2 projects in uni, all my homework/projects were short and small scale, meaning I already knew how to complete 90% of it, and just had to learn the content fro

Thanks for this explanation. One question: Once the atoms are entangled, I understand that both take on the same superposition. At this point, in any possible way, although we don't know the states, do they actually communicate instantane

Oh I see -- I think we're interpreting 'external motivator' differently. You coming to the decision on your own that you wanted to create a game is not to me an example of being externally motivated to begin programming. That's an example

I'm not sure if I understand what you mean. If I do I'm not sure if I agree. A love for computers and all they're capable of isn't born inside a game that gives you points for building [insert program]. A love for programming goes deeper

I don't think it gets lost, it just loses it's value. In my company we have "games" all over (also known as extrinsic motivators or artificial targets). For example, in the consulting world we're chasing higher billability, ie. the more hou
