Since there seem to be a lot of conversations regarding the Google blog post along the lines of "A: this seems pretty complete. B: no it's not, they don't specific what they do share"... here's some details on what

Of course it's hedged with a limitation of scale. Obviously Google, like any other company, is going to provide information on much smaller scales (e.g. a user or a handful of users) for investigation based on specific court-issued war

Given that the graph indicates they received 20,000 - not 2,000 - I would have a hard time believing it as well!

For email you've already read, sure. But it's often nice to have some organization for what you haven't yet read, so you can focus on the email you care most about first.

Which is why the tabs have automatic algorithmic categorization - so that all of the people who don't take the time to set up custom filters and labels still get some automatic organization.

You don't think people would set up a tab to keep all of the noisy "this is what's on sale this week" emails separate if they could?

So basically you have no real constructive suggestions and are just instinctively lashing out at anything that doesn't feel "new". Gotcha.

Err, what? The labels only sort your existing email. There's no new content involved.

I think you misunderstand what that tab is for. It's not a place for Google advertising; it's a place where promotional emails from any site are automatically sorted into - to keep them separate from other useful email. E.g. a clothing we

Unlike labels, which require fixed rules (or manual action) to place emails into them, the tabs sort emails algorithmically.

I actually disagree with basically all of the points raised in this article. Sure, apparently Enum doesn't fit your particular desires for it - but there's good reasons why those choices were made. Colour = Enum('Colour', 'red, green'

Luck of the draw, actually. Someone in an IRC channel I'm in mentioned it [in the context of "someone asked me to set this up, I told them heck no"], I glanced at the page, did a double-take. It's debatable whether DWH is more or less secur

Yep. That's the kind of approach I'd like to see Chartio recommending (or at least, providing suggestions for).

Let's go for less sad. I've changed the title a little to better reflect the intent of the post. With regards to cloud - you're right, Amazon and Rackspace and so on are a single point of failure for a lot of businesses... but they also hav

From the article: "It’s quite possible that the risks I’ve highlighted above are ones that you feel it’s okay to take, and in that case, go for it – as long as you’re respecting your end users’ interests as well."

Yeah, it's not at all foolproof or even great. I don't think there's really a good solution that still provides true anonymity, since the only way to prevent box-stuffing is to actually restrict people to one entry per real person (and that

You can display the # of items already entered and the timestamps they were entered at (but not the values). It's not perfect, but it would help eliminate the "pre-loading" attack. However, that still leaves the "post-loading" attack, where

I go by the xkcd standard of 4 words, though that doesn't change the math, just the numbers.

I was actually thinking of cases like MMO game accounts - often times the actual game account isn't created until after the game is purchased.

It actually wouldn't, because the entropy doesn't rely on the attacker not knowing the general format - it relies on the number of words available as choices.

That's a very binary way of looking at it. Depending on the sign up flow, it may be much more difficult to discover the existence of a username or not, than it is in the login form. (For instance, if the signup flow involves payment details
