That seems pretty good, no? There won’t be any faffing with vat and it’ll be integrated right into Xero?

Can’t recall where I saw it in the past (maybe even on HN - I know a bunch of the digital team hang around here) but I read something about how it was also important to make it function well on low powered mobile devices with poor internet

Lots of people have updated_at time stamps on all tables, so you could probably inspect those to find your way back. I’ve never tried to query the history implicitly hidden in Postgres tables so I’m not sure how possible (or sensible) any o

If you’re wondering if you should invest your time in this exceptional book, you could read this first in order to fully appreciate how exceptional it is. https://journal.stuffwithstuff.com/2020/04/05/crafting

AAISP will also do line bonding, but you’ll obviously be paying more and I’d imagine it’s not going to be that much better. I switched over to their FTTP offering recently and, while it’s not super fast compared to what others are claiming,

For what it's worth, it's worked for upgrading me this far (9.6 -> 13); though I'll be looking to go the logical replication route for the next round. I suspect the way I'll be setting it up is much the same as what y

It’s been a long time since I used SQL Server so I don’t know that upgrade process well (I’m willing to believe it’s smoother though, especially wrt to replication / failover). Keep in mind that they’re upgrading from a database versio

Not in my experience. You can use the —-link flag to get it to use hard links so it doesn’t need to move the data at all. Have been through this process myself a few times and it only took seconds on a 50-100GB db. I’m always a little surpr

I think it’s really important to differentiate the code and the coder. Where we use this technique, I actually say to candidates, “I don’t care about the language / quality / age / immaturity of the code- it’s just something

We do the same thing and I find it’s a reasonable approach. For the candidate, it puts them at ease; they’re talking about something they’re familiar with (we go a step further and ask them to make changes to it).

You’re not the general public. Most people don’t even use ad blockers. Those of us on HN are a different breed in that regard. Also, even clicking it and then returning later works for the advertisers.

In terms of the choices they're unsure about; I'd say it's best to stay away from Celery / RabbitMQ if you don't really need it. For us just using RQ (Redis backed queue) has been a lot less hassle. Obviously it

I also think it’s just kinda clunky compared to excel or Google sheets. Maybe if you get used to it it’s ok to work with, but I guess you run into the issue that any friction makes it a hard sell to those who are used to excel.

Exporting all sheets as individual csvs in one go… Recently I’ve just been using numbers because it’s there on the odd occasions I need to access an xslx file and, while everything is a little different, it’s just better.

Sure, but you have to also accept that there are aspects that have made the internet a worse experience without actually improving the situation from a privacy point of view.

Yup, sqla is super meta and, thus, complicated (just due to the problem space). Better is alembic / alembicutils where you can dig into the autogenerate system they’re layering over sqla. Weirdly enough, I enjoy digging through C and J

Look through the stack you’re familiar with. For me that means nginx, uwsgi, flask, sqlalchemy, alembic - but I’ll look at anything I have a question about. My trick is to dig in when something doesn’t work the way I expect. Or someone says

We had to use Teams for the kids school over lockdown. What a dumpster fire. On a daily basis you could never tell which method of extracting a document would or wouldn’t work. Sometimes they wouldn’t open at all. Or would only open on web,
