Interestingly, treesitter is designed for this space (parsing invalid structures with a time component) but it’s still not used as a base for LSPs. I once asked why on HN and people that know more than me said it wasn’t suitable.

It was off the back of that talk that I was able to finally convince my team to go this route (back in 2019). They'd been trying to handle optimistic updates through Apollo and I was pushing the to make our own sync system over our mob

I looked at Earthly just a couple of weeks back. It’s a tool that makes perfect sense - especially when I was deep in a makefile wishing the caching was as automated as docker. In the end I decided that I couldn’t face the complexity of dea

This argument always confuses me. It depends on what you’re doing but if you’re doing web services, as most here are, the crash is limited to the request being served. The blast radius is a single request, right? In every likelihood it _is_

How is this not a thing yet? If I could pay a tiny amount per article on Medium that I currently can’t read, I totally would. Surely there’s a system for these micropayments? Why hasn’t it taken off?

Take. My. Money. Not for me, but my eldest picked up procreate recently and was immediately able to create all sorts of amazing things. She’s even been able to create some great animations, but this makes procreate look like a toy in that r

This seems to have stalled but if popped up a few times on HN in the past. Might still be worth a look. https://github.com/tabulapdf/tabula Are the documents scans, or do they have real text on them? It’s worth trying

Yup, slip of the tongue. Though, I do make other people read the spec at work, so I’m that too.

To be fair, if you wanted to stop copying of text it would be easiest just to drop the ToUnicode mapping against the fonts and then it’s a manual process for people to recreate them.

In my experience it’s easiest just to break the xref table and run something like “mutool clean” to fix it again. It can be completely derived from the content so it’s safe to do.

This topic comes up periodically as most people think PDFs are some impenetrable binary format, but they’re really not. They are a graph of objects of different types. The types themselves are well described in the official spec (I’m a sadi

Interesting! I’ve always wanted to get into beekeeping. How big of a space do you need for a hive though?

Totally. I’ve reworked a lot of the plumbing and electrics I paid pros for because I wasn’t happy with the results. I make a lot of mistakes, but as you say, you can make your peace with them.

8 hours is not a bad investment at all! I also learned ableton without any resources, but back in 2003 when it was a simpler product. It begs to be tinkered with (I think that’s the draw of it) but it’s a deep bit of software.

For me too. Though it’s more DIY in general (plumbing, electrics, decorating etc too). Built myself a shed from scratch earlier in the summer as a warm up for building a garden office. Currently have the roof off the porch (somewhat regret

The fact that this is news to you makes me feel better about not considering it myself. I suspect we have a few large indexes that could be given the same treatment.

I also think of faceted search of having the counts and narrowing the options as you drill down. Ironically enough that was through Endeca which was introduced to my company (at great expense) as I was pushing for solr. Eventually solr beca

Ok so what about: def fn(a) fn(**{'a': True, 0: False) I get it, python is dynamic so it allows all sorts of things but I’d be pretty cross if I was debugging code like this. Explicit is better and all that. Nobody real

I guess my point is, either the content has some value to you or not. If you’d rather not sit through the ad for the content, that’s fine, go and spend your time doing something that does have value to you. I use YouTube primarily as a diy

If you don’t care about the creators then why watch the content? Sure, the subscription might not make sense to you, but either the content has some value or not. The ads are the value exchange. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like the ads eith

Are you pinning your dependency versions? If so, things should all still work later. If you upgrade libs then sometimes you need to do some work. I’ve found python libs to be pretty stable though so it’s never too bad.

For people using 1Password you can get it to act as an agent to lookup keys directly in your vaults. Again, great integration on a Mac where you can use your fingerprint each time the key is required.

By the time everything is imported and running you can be into the territory of really not wanting to do it on every request. I’ve not timed it in my case for a while but you’re definitely looking at 100s or 1000s of ms.

Ah yes. Fair enough. I worked on a project that used neo4j once and it was early enough when I joined that I was able to convince them to switch to Postgres before it was too late. It was the missing tooling more than the db itself (though,
