How do poor people get a roof over their heads if there aren't any landlords? It's ridiculous to expect everyone to have $10,000s in cash to get a mortgage before they're allowed to have a place to live.

It would be silly IMO for the taxman to officially discriminate against (poorer!) dishwashers vs. waiters in the same restaurant.

No, we should just keep building more housing to sell to them so there's enough to go around. Not my metaphor but I like it: imagine if there were laws restricting GM from making more than a million cars a year and we sat around compla

Realistically the middle class would have their parents co-sign and poor people just wouldn't be able to go to school anymore. Not a great idea.

Can't you refinance the 10% one? My unsecured personal line of credit that's fully dischargeable in bankruptcy only charges 6%. 10% is a massive ripoff. I'm only a couple of years out of school so don't think I'm ri

Rent costs less than (mortgage interest + taxes + condo fees + maintenance) where I live. This is extremely dependent on location.

There's nothing special about credit, loans, and taxes. It's 7th grade reading comprehension and math. The problem is not financial illiteracy it's general ignorance, illiteracy, and innumeracy.

Why not the entire salary? If you're already worth $100m, you're working for fun and prestige not because you need cash to pay your rent. All the famous rich ceos have tiny salaries and make their money on capital gains. It's

Can't get a TN for investment banking, it's not a supported occupation (one of my friends had to do this). Similarly for a few other occupations. And, of course, some want to hedge their bets in case they do want a green card in t

I didn't miss your point, I just don't agree with it. I suspect 80%+ of H1B visas go to Indian/Chinese nationals simply because they represent a similarly large proportion of STEM graduates interested in emigrating from their

Land may be scarce but housing isn't. We can keep building half-empty 60-story condos and taking rich foreigners' money until the cows come home.

I would feel like there was a noose around my neck if I couldn't move without paying $30k in realtors fees (and possibly incurring capital loss depending on timing).
