The status quo is poor people talk to nobody and rich people talk to humans. This is an improvement, no?

What's accomplished is that productive workers can live close to work instead of the double whammy of having a long commute and paying extra to subsidize rich people that don't work. The fact that some people have been there longe

I don't agree it's hair-splitting. You can't get kicked out by surprise by repealing Prop 13 unless you've enjoyed huge capital gains and are therefore likely rich. It would make no difference for poor people who don

The value provided is the ceiling on the cost (barring various inefficiencies like the principal-agent problem). They're not unrelated.

You don't need to move 3,000 miles away, you just have to move outside of commuting range where the prices fall off a cliff. You can still live in the same quality house and see your family frequently. It's nuts to tax Joe Worker

Lowest I've ever heard of is $4k a month for an internship in the SF Bay Area. $8k is the highest I took home but all my US internships were over $6500. This was throughout 2011-2013. If you're making less than $8k/month as a

When you borrow money to invest in stocks the stocks are in an account that the bank can seize when the net value is low enough. It's much much easier to repossess than an illiquid house.

You have this exactly backwards. Stocks are much easier to repossess and liquidate during a margin call which results in margin interest being lower than mortgage interest. You can't get as much leverage as you can with real estate but

It wasn't anything like this when I went shopping for a car at Audi and MB last year. I was expecting some discount for paying cash since the interest rates were all less than 2% (which barely covers inflation). However they were compl

No, I'm saying the market is illiquid enough (or it was a year ago when I was doing this) to write a bot and wait for the price difference across the US exchange and CA exchange to cancel out the 0.5% round trip trading fees. Which, by

Transferwise is stupidly expensive. Costs about $140 in fees to transfer $10k from US to Canada vs. ~$0 for BTC depending on how sophisticated you are in timing the trade.

You don't need to work more hours you just need better machines to make the average hour worked more productive. If the productivity went up 10% you could give everyone a UBI of 10% of GDP without any additional hours worked.

That's a big presumption isn't it? It was accepted wisdom that you had to pick individual stocks until Vanguard popularized the index fund and now it's accepted wisdom to do the opposite.

Honestly curious, has anyone ever tried giving $1 million to 4,000 moderately vetted wannabe entrepreneurs? Say, the entire graduating classes of Stanford, Berkeley, or MIT. How do we know it doesn't work?

I'm a part-time Uber driver and I've never been treated like garbage by them. They pay me exactly what they say they'll pay me and on time. If I don't like the rate I'm earning, I turn it off and go home.

Maybe teach English in Asia or drive an Uber? Or go to trade school to become an electrician or mechanic? Those are the escape routes I daydream about when I'm unhappy at work, anyways :)

If I choose to drive 1000km that I don't have to drive in a 35mpg Prius I am not more environmentally conscious than someone who drives 200km in a 10mpg Hummer. Similarly if I have 10 kids instead of 2. Anyways, I should have said &quo
