The update to migrate the filesystem took way longer than the docs said, I ended up just letting it run and came back a few hours later. And it wasn't like I had much in there. Otherwise it was straightforward. I switched to windows

I'm agnostic to Win10 vs OSX as a desktop environment. What I like is running an real copy of Debian that starts instantly, and has transparent access to local files. I'm sure I could cobble something together with VMWare but th

Can you give an example of what negligence might be happening here?

The thing I don't get about the outrage in this thread is what the actual harm is. Is there any plausible way you could be harmed by someone tracking your mouse movements?

I bought it for $10 ("$40 off") and that's still how its listed for me. I never tried the other free options but reviews online were consistent that X410 was good. I've been happy with it.

X410 is a bit more inconvenient w/ WSL2 because the VM has it's own IP address vs using whatever local magic it did before.

With WSL I'm running stock Debian so every too I use is just an apt-get away. I don't run anything on the Windows side for development except VS Code.

I switched to WSL2 a month ago and it's been great. With WSL1 I'd regularly run into subtle compatibility problems but haven't seen anything like that with 2. Despite a handful of annoyances, the Win10+WSL2+Visual Studio Co

Often this comes down to how much money you're making. Any product has a long, long tail of work you could be doing to improve things. When you're a scrappy startup with few engineers you wouldn't even think of spending tim

I'm not sure what the conventions are these days, but the $75k bounty seems reasonable for the severity of the problem (even if large compared to others I've seen). What's the record bounty size so far?

From the comment: > you don’t get atomic writes across multiple data structures They're saying that lock-free approaches don't help when you have to ensure consistency across multiple datastructures.

That's not how costs for these companies work. They have CDNs inside the networks of large ISPs, and everything else goes over leased lines with fixed capacity. They aren't paying by the byte like some Comcast overage fee.

Facebook did a huge company-wide refocus on mobile at a time when it was not at all clear smartphones were going to become the dominant platform. I really do give zuck et.al. a lot of credit for seeing that coming [source: I was an employe

From the paper: "For datacenter applications, BOLT achieves up to 7.0% performance speedups on top of profile-guided function reordering and LTO." This is used for large binaries, like hhvm. There's a lot more details here:

Note that 64% of new listings is very different than 64% of all properties. e.g, last I looked 1.5% of SF properties were on AirBnB (down from 3% before the recent regulations), though unclear what fraction were available for rent full-time

How is open source software harmed by Microsoft being successful promoting open source software? This feels like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Closing everything down will spread out new infections so the healthcare system can handle them, and it buys time to roll out a testing process.

It's a fair criticism when there's some restrictions on supply. In SF about 1.5% of housing is on AirBnB. Is that tiny? Lots? It's probably not enough to move prices either way.

I'm surprised to see the pessimism here. For a family of 5 AirBnB is far better than hotels. I'd much rather get a whole house than cram everyone into a single hotel room. And I can't remember the last time I had a bad e

The company wasn't very large at that time. Probably less than 100 engineers in 2007. One person could understand the bulk of the codebase in a a reasonable amount of time. There was way more code than you're seeing here though,
