Wage labor in capitalism is by its very nature adversarial, I'd say.

Most road safety problems boil down to too many cars. The US & Canada aren't interested in changing that though. In the US we have 40k road deaths/year baked into the culture. It's really jarring, as someone who doesn

This magazine is founded by a former NYPost Op-Ed editor & Wall Street Journal columnist. It's not surprising to me that they run, essentially, conservative opinion pieces dressed up as Meaningful Analysis.

Zero consideration for pedestrians, typical of US traffic engineering. Sucks here.

The worker is alienated from (most of) the product of their labor. Until that changes, "productivity" doesn't benefit them, only their employers. Why should we want more of that?

A quick review of this blog's posts does not make me think this is an author to be taken very seriously.

When I joined Talking Points Memo, AMP was the new "hot" thing. I fought hard to stop us from jumping on that train and I'm glad I did.

Do you take an uber/taxi/etc? I always assumed that you'd need to buy in bulk quantities to make costco worth it here, which would require a car

It's jarring to see "record high housing starts" and "dropping home prices" presented as bad news. Fascinating piece, thanks for sharing.

This is the kind of comment you write when your only experience with NYC is as a tourist in the densest parts of Manhattan.

It's the cars for me. I hate driving. I hate how everyone having a car makes it necessary to drive everywhere. Very few cities in the us let you get away without owning a car. NYC isn't perfect, its just better than everywhere els

Public bus transit and private car transit are inherently in conflict. You basically can't run them on the same streets and expect the bus to not suck. You could, of course, run the bus in a dedicated, separate right-of-way to solve th

To be fair, that's largely the democratic plan too. See NYC/LA/etc. D's and R's alike hate the homeless.

So in this land of topsy turvy logic, high crime stats is a good thing, because that means they're being reported?

This SF district attorney recall thing is a really good example of the media's power to manufacture a story. Even if you accept the premise that crime stats rise or fall in response to DA policies, those stats mostly fell during Boud

Any landlord who finds themselves so burdened by missed rent payments ought to just sell their properties. The market's never been better. They can use the windfall to start a real business instead.
