Say you have a bank account with $100 in it. At 100% reserve requirements, the bank must have that $100 actually in its possession at all times. This is very safe, because you are guaranteed to be able to withdraw your money in the event of

Because of robust social housing policies, yes. Homeless people exist but are much more rare. A large number of homeless people is the mark of a weak, dysfunctional society.

My older sister had end-stage renal failure (from IgA nephropathy [0]) and was on dialysis, so I donated my kidney to her. If you want to make an incredible difference in someone's life, I can't recommend it enough! There are cool

I recommend you read Taleb. Much of his work focuses on the differences between domains following normal distribution vs power law, and the folly of mistaking one for the other.

Right, but what is the purpose of statistics like this? The purpose is for them to inform our understanding of what might happen in the future. As mentioned above, since market movements follow a power law rather than normal distribution, t

Market movements follow a power law, not a normal distribution, so average is an utterly useless measure.

This point gets brought up every time someone brings up the prevalence of torture & rape in media. I submit that it just derails discussion and never goes anywhere interesting. There is a difference between regular action movie style vi

I wrote up an in-depth introduction to a different nonlocal game (CHSH) here: https://ahelwer.ca/post/2018-12-07-chsh/ It's a bit more complicated to follow but absolutely worth the work.

Entanglement doesn't necessarily always produce opposites, even with spin. Measurements just become correlated in some way.

Yeah, the expensive/hard part is generating & measuring only a single photon at a time. Of course if you fire a laser through an SPDC crystal a bunch of photon pairs will come out entangled, but that isn't terribly useful for

Basic primer on spontaneous parametric down-conversion: it's an optical phenomenon where a photon of a given frequency (energy) is split into two entangled photons whose frequencies add up to the original photon. The resulting frequenc

Not to put too fine a point on it, but if you're working in ads you are working to surveil & modify the behavior of your fellow humans against their consent. Make your own judgement about whether you should be proud of that.

Yeah, I really don't want to pay more than around $120 for a decent GPU, which gives me a used gtx 1060 or 780ti. Both of those play new games at high settings on 1440p, what more could you want? Shelling out $700 for a GPU to get good

I think you misunderstand what I mean by "distribution" - there is already enough housing for everybody (see article), it is just not distributed in an equitable way among people who need it. Nothing to do with shipping houses.

You can't build yourself out of the housing crisis when the problem is one of distribution, not one of supply. The idea that housing should be treated as an investment is, itself , the problem. How can you want housing to be affordabl

I have a folder cathartically-named "useless bullshit" into which around 50% of my emails are automatically routed and never read. Also any email with a DL in the BCC field is automatically routed to the trash.
