Those rights are available domestically in the West, yes, at least for the time being. Those same rights have never been extended to the citizens of the countries whose democratic governments were toppled or subverted by what we call the We

There are never any sources on these things until 20 years after the fact. So we really don't know. But if you'd gone ahead and assumed America had a hand in every coup in the Western world over the past century, you'd at lea

Same boat. I ended up just paying for adguard and using safari. All the browsers on iOS are just wrappers of safari anyway, as far as I can tell.

In my view it's about the interface. Any utopian community must interface with the rest of the currently-not-utopian world. I suspect the utopian aspect can only be maintained if that interface is very small and restricted. Otherwise t

Dual-booting needs to become easier and less bug-prone. People need to be able to try Linux before committing their main system. One year ago I tried setting up dual-booting on my system with Ubuntu and it irreparably trashed the Windows bo

Nobody ever says that in professional environments. They’ll retroactively develop a plausible-sounding justification for their gut instinct. Sometimes, if they’re not particularly self-observant they’ll even believe the explanation they cre

I've been thinking - continually I hear the way to help with a problem is to donate money to a charity. But is there a single social ill that has actually been solved (not ameliorated - permanently solved) through a bunch of individual

Okay, so you actually can pick out the issue. You just don't mind being manipulated by corporations. Fine, but strange that the angle you took was "aw shucks geez guys I'm so confused about all this".

Then let people who believe that go stare at ads. Submitting yourself to manipulation out of a sense of duty to the viability of a business model is deeply weird. Alternatively, if you believe those ads don't affect you then why does i

You can argue against this all you want but these arguments sound eerily similar to the "it's just a slow database" type arguments of yesteryear. Bubbles can eventually have value, weirdly - their irrational nature can sort o

I think I can explain. I understand why others value them, although I don't agree with the valuation (as a litmus test, I also think shelling out $30k for a genuine Rolex is very stupid). My lack of agreement also does not prevent me f

I'm thinking the only way forward is building an alternative power structure to electoral politics that bullies the politicians around. Corporations and money control the government - it's a truism at this point. Place that which

Not very mysterious. The reason you were elected was due to an intensely-expensive PR and media campaign. This requires a lot of money. A potential source of this money is a small group of people who financially benefit from the country

Heating is extremely simple compared to cooling. There will never be a part shortage for heating appliances. A space heater is basically some high-resistance wire and a fan.

Yeah. Hacking together a deployment or CI script is basically an exercise in figuring out which API calls take what parameters, and I would not count it as programming for the purpose of retrospectively feeling like I wrote code.
