Achim, founder of AirGradient here. Nice to wake up and see a hacker news post benefiting from our open source air monitor designs, especially with the original design that we started with so many years ago! Makes me realize how much AirGra

Running a positive pressure system in my house since many years, I agree that sucking in fresh air from outside and filter it with a HEPA filter makes more sense. You probably need to make sure you use a fan that creates enough pressure to

Actually the real accuracy is much better, especially with optical NDIR sensors. We do a lot of testing against reference grade sensors and typically see very good performance and reproducibility [1]. [1] https://www.airgradient.

It seems that there has been fundamental mistakes and overstatements in the amount of particles from brakes in much of the secondary research in the last decades. Details: https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.estle

Can we stop with MBA bashing? I feel it degrades a whole group of people to a specific stereotype that might or might not be true. How about lawyers, PhDs, political science majors, etc. Let’s look at the humans and their character, not tit

This is not only a problem with dishwashers, but a general trend with many electronic devices. We see the same in the air quality monitoring industry, where more and more manufacturers lockdown their devices and make them cloud only operabl

It seems that the actual hardware is just a dumb microphone with a Bluetooth connection to the phone and basically the whole thing is running on the cloud. Couldn’t e.g. an always on AirPod etc do the same trick?

This is actually affecting a few of our projects in countries without hardly any air quality monitors where we use(d) these stations at the embassies to calibrate our low-cost open source monitors. It's really ironic, because this proj

There are couple of reasons why I blog. Some of them are the typical ones like to reach my audience, to inform about your products or opinions that I have. But there is one thing that hasn’t been mentioned here yet. Sometimes I also blog to

Yes I agree. You should be transparent about promoting your own company. Sneaking it into like this will definitely backfire. What prevents you from being open about it?

I live in Thailand and I applaud their work - also here at the Chao Praya river. However, I wonder if the money would not be better spend in lobbying, enforcing etc. a plastic tax on throw away plastic goods. In my home country in Germany,

I think in general it's a very good article and I like the summary in the end how the different interventions can also have trade offs. The only thing I would disagree with is the recommendation of the uHoo monitor. There are many peop

We do something on the IoT side with our local first air quality monitors. So no forced platform lock in or subscriptions. We are pretty much the only one in the space doing this and it has definitely been a big advantage for us to differen

Yes, I immediately noticed that it's likely AI written and I thought that this really discounts an otherwise great story. What I mean is that if the author does not put in the least effort to make it not AI sounding, how much does the

It's not clear to me from the description if this is also completely open source hardware. Are the schematics, BoM, firmware published under a permissible license? If so, where are they accessible? And if not, I would be curious to kno

Actually since a year or so, we use the ESP32-C3 and the SHT40. You can check our website for the new model [1]. [1] https://www.airgradient.com/documentation/

I am not sure if I agree. In turn this would mean that if a company is profitable, it can have a nice office and spend more money into "unnecessary" things? Wouldn't it be better to reinvest that profit into the business to m

This comment looks so much ChatGPT / Gemini generated. I'm not against using it but it feels inappropriate for hacker news discussions and I am not really sure it adds value.

I would recommend to use an TVOC sensor that detects smell very easily and then automatically switch on a fan. Could be a fun project. Just need: - TVOC sensor like the SGP41 - ESP32 microcontroller - Electric Relay

I believe often companies or rather decision makers are afraid of going fully open-source because they invested a lot of money into the product and are afraid some other company uses it, offers it cheaper and ultimately harms the originator

There are many cases where the level does not drop to ambient levels, e.g. offices in basements, low-energy houses etc. We even saw schools where the classrooms were not able to drop to ambient levels over the whole unoccupied weekend becau
