Why not timestamps + description? This way, even if you create migrations on different branches, you don't have version number overlap. Rails does that if I remember correctly. eg: 201509102039-add-this-to-table.sql 201510220840-add-t

I think Aurora doesn't compare to any other host-it-yourself solution, being managed and 'replicated' across multiple datacenters. Plus, Hetzner, really?

See, I'm Italian and the thing that is insulting is how Schäuble and Merkel sometimes make decisions in this situation without even consulting the rest of the creditors (France, Italy and others). I get that your government has to work

As a European I find German foreign policy quite insulting. This needs to change in one way or the other.

I would buy it immediately if it wasn't for the lack of a graphical schema designer like MySQL Workbench ( https://www.mysql.com/common/images/products/MySQL_Workbench... ) That would be a huge thing, cons

Looks good. Still, pg doesn't have a client with a good graphical editor yet (to draw tables and their relationships between them). On the other hand, MySQL has MySQL Workbench which works quite well, even if it has some bugs

I presume that you have to work with crappy internet connections in exotic places, how do you deal with it? It's interesting because, at Redokun, we switched away from Hipchat and migrated to Slack only because it worked much better on

I haven't tried it actually. I evaluated it a few years ago and I remember that the queue persistance was missing (though now I see it is supported), and it lacked handling retries out of the box (which Gearman does). Now I've wro

So, now I'm wondering: why is Stripe using Mongo at all? Maybe they are planning to migrate to another DBMS?

Well, there are already libraries which abstracts the ZeroMQ layer with Request/Response interfaces. A few months ago I hacked a bit with a Zend Framework 1 application and Mongrel2 and it worked well, although zf1 is not the best exam

One thing that I don't understand is why Mongrel2 didn't really took off in the webserver world. It seems a complete product and the concept behind it is very nice. Plus, it doesn't need any external module to work with a spe

I didn't know about the -n switch. Usually I need to get to the bottom of the file and find the last occurrence of a string in the logs (G, CTRL+C to stop counting lines, ?string to search) and the slower part is waiting for less to ma

For semi-large file (1/2GB+) less takes seconds if not minutes to count the number of lines (it read the whole file) so you can navigate and search across the file. In that cases tail -f and grep are still way faster than less, though

To be fair, when it comes to data consistency especially on structured dbs in high load environments, all-SQL solutions are usually better than, say, client side scripts wrapped in transactions

This is interesting. I think developers should be more aware of how the DBMS works under the hood. Edit: In my case, I still use row-level lock when implementing the state machine pattern on a model. It enforces the application-level-consis

Row-level locks are really sweet in case you have to handle multiple row/tables update/insert in the same transaction, in order to keep the db consistent even under sustained concurrency. But, dead locks really strike you if you d

How do you handle exceptions and errors who would require a rework of the job? That is interesting, I was looking for something similar to an EBS for PHP time ago, but eventually I wrote myself an ad hoc solution which uses MySQL (and row l

"but I automatically wonder what kind of hardware I will be on" that is actually a good point. Is the underling hardware server grade? You can easily achieve good performance on some common desktop hardware (or some cheap home-built server)
