Uh, wouldn't this actually be called something like "the US Department of Education"? It's been a rousing success, too - it's allowed our Ministry of Truth to claim things like "comrades! Our production of students that pass the standardize

This is Outlook's fault for encouraging poor email habits, like using "reply-all" by default instead of being conscious of the recipients of an email.

The best way to counteract inequality is by raising more revenue and then spending it on things that the middle and lower classes need, like national health insurance. It ain't the job of the gubmint to "counteract inequality" i

I can't say I agree. We have increased our pool by accepting sub-par students, and it seems to be shifting the entire curve backwards, rather than "spreading the tips". I don't know what the right answer is (or if there is one); what feel

I'm not so sure a simple drop in enrollment is such a bad thing. I recently taught a couple of graduate level courses in a nearby CS department, and I can tell you that they should "un-enroll" about half of their graduate students, and it

Switch to an ARM or PPC chip, and it's a completely different process. Yup. That's why you should do it for learning purposes - getting your head around how a machine bootstraps itself is, to my mind, one of the harder things to

Eh. This isn't really very interesting, anyway. 27 years of screwing around with physics still hasn't produced any offspring (quantum computing doesn't count yet). yawn

I made my own opportunity: I just started tutoring. I made an announcement in my church's newsletter, and I told people in person. People come, we talk math, and that's it.

I'd rather not malign the school. Let's just say they're overrun by populations of students that are underqualified - a condition I think is common among schools not in the "top tier".

This is good general advice for anyone with even a remote interest in writing academic papers (or even just good technical papers). I just finished teaching a graduate course in computer architecture, and I was shocked at how unprepared the

Writing one is not a waste of time, because you learn what's really going on just after POST. But trying to actually use your own and maintain it is pretty much a waste. Write one to learn how it works, then throw it away and use Grub.

I think the main consideration when talking about renting or buying is the time involved. In Texas, I've found that if you're going to live somewhere for at least 2 years (or so, depending on the market), and you set out to find a particul

Good thoughts I agree with in general, but I think this only barely passes the smell-test for strongly-typed-dynamic-language snobbery (and the little table of language characteristics is suspect, I think). Sometimes you just forget a semic
