I would say that the most common errors are because there is no built-in string type (at least in C) and lot of library function expects null terminated strings. And these are hard to get right, because they are very prone to off-by-one err

In C or C++ you can even allocate objects on the stack, which has only the cost of increasing the stack pointer (meaning it is very cheap), and also you have precise control over the object's lifetime.

Found a great comparison between the answers: http://zi.fi/shootout/ It is basically the great programming language shootout at http://shootout.alioth.debian.org/ redone with different GCC optimization levels. It is clearly visible wher

(Another author here) The basic issue is that we didn't want to include external libraries, because it's a pain to debug, pain to build on multiple platforms and there are licensing issues. Also we don't use so many datastructures, so we ro

Also don't forget licensing issues. It becomes important when you make a living of selling software.

Eclipse and CDT for C++ coding sucks. However this doesn't mean there aren't any good tools. Both Visual Studio and XCode are very good for working with C++.

In practice there is a certain kind of minhashing that is used in key-value stores, which is called a Bloom-filter. Basically it is a probabilistic bitmap index for quickly telling if a certain elem is in a set. It is used in BigTable, Hbas

Since 1991 :) Seriously, it is one of the biggest open-source C codebases out there, with thousands of hackers working on it. And the result is very good, as the majority of the internet is running on it.

In most recent C compilers you can turn on warnings for at least missing return values from functions and not having a default: in a switch. It is good practice to compile C/C++ programs with high warning level, and fix all the warnings bef

I wouldn't call it `cleaner and more modern' either but I really don't care. The best thing in Debian is that you don't have to visit their website often (or at all), because everything works in it, and everything works from command line.

Checked out your site and as an avid backpacker found the idea pretty cool, but yes, it feels empty. My experience is that backpackers tend to use Facebook a lot, so integrate your login with Facebook Connect for starters. Make it more soci

The bigger an UDP packet the less the probability it arrives. 1400 is probably chosen because it is less than the usual MTU of ethernet which is 1500.

With the latest Chrome you can try the --enable-vertical-tabs command line option. See: http://www.howtonew.com/how-to-move-chrome-tabs-to-the-left-... http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2010/08/google-chrome-labs....

This is cool for porting existing C/C++ libraries to the web without actually having to rewrite it in Javascript. Similar project for Flash is Alchemy: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/alchemy/

In Unix it is rather "everything has a file descriptor at API level" while in Plan9 it is really "everything is a file" from the system standpoint. It is not surprising since Plan9 also came from Bell Labs, and they learned the lessons of U
