What's HN's attitude towards SafeCurves[1]? I know djb knows his stuff, but the very binary "safe" / "unsafe" breakdown seems a bit dubious. gmaxwell wrote a nice forum post[2] explaining why secp256k1 is

The sole argument in this article seems to be that OO systems introduce more complexity than is justified which results in larger code bases than an FP-based system would, which increases maintenance costs. Then the article goes on to show

I've taken a whiteboard test that asked me to come up with an algorithm that was difficult for me. I got the job even though my solution was horribly inefficient (and I knew it), and the interviewer later told me that the point wasn&#x

Looks pretty similar to MGRS (Military Grid Reference System) and/or Maidenhead Locators. Yeah, this proposal produces names which are pronounceable (in English), but that's the only advantage I see. https://en.wikipedi

I've found that even in cases where a normal refresh won't restart the animations, a Ctrl-F5 will (forcing the images to be reloaded from the server, instead of cache). This is in Firefox on Arch.

This was posted yesterday on a similar story. It really comes down to detecting cases where the IMSIcatcher operates differently than the normal towers. But a lot of those are lost in the noise of different carriers. One of the stronger sig

A few years ago, my company was setting up a second office a few hours drive away. They wanted a replicated file share between the two offices. For the initial sync, they drove a NAS from the main office to the satellite. Then they had (ope

What does the proprietary secure phone do to detect these things? Can I get an app to alert me if I connect to a stingray-type device?

It's a real shame that the only widely deployed OpenID support is tied heavily to Google or Facebook. Actually, is that still even OpenID? Or is it something more proprietary?

This is a great write-up about a world into which I normally have no visibility. I didn't realize on a that manufacturing capabilities for small-scale operations had advanced that much.

Cool, thanks! That's pretty close to my current approach as well. The super important data is replicated into Dropbox, and a few hundred gigs of somewhat important data is cloned over to a friend's box manually every few weeks.

I'm amused that the average reward for tablets is higher than phones, and the average reward for phones is higher than laptops. Phone $100-200 Keys $40-100 Wallet $40-100 Tablet $200-500 Laptop $40-100
