IMO it really isn't that similar. There's a fundamental difference between a fax machine and Flock Safety. One is a device that you can pick up off the shelf at an office store and which is used by all manner of customers for all

"But for" Flock Safety, this would never have happened. Similar to saying that Tesla is responsible for designing a safe AutoPilot even though there's still a driver in the loop who is responsible.

Well sure, and I'm not a lawyer or your lawyer, this isn't legal advice, etc. I'm pretty confident that I know who killed both of those people. I'm pretty confident that both did it for ideological reasons. I'm pret

You should read Normal Accidents. "Human error" is an excuse. It isn't really actionable. Instead of trying to fix the "human error", you must design the system such that it does not permit life-threatening errors.

If I were going to approach a vehicle whose driver was suspected of homicide, I would do so in a very obvious, slow, and non-threatening manner, probably without obviously being a cop. The last thing I would want to do if someone is potenti

There are some other examples in the thread, but two that come to mind for me are Charlie Kirk's killer and the guy who shot the cop in Alvarado, Texas after the ICE protest. Arguable another example is the guy who killed the United He

In my experience, it looks almost identical, just mirror imaged. Lots of anger and fear, a strong certainty that they know the full story about every issue and that the other side is evil or idiotic. No grace or space in their hearts to con

As a long time transmission user, I've felt exactly the opposite. They have been slowly falling behind other clients. They still don't have torrent v2 support even![1] It took them many years to implement sequential downloading.[2

Sure, it just seems odd to specify it. I haven't seen that in a link in a long time. I don't usually snoop Location redirect chains in my browser though, so maybe it's more common than I think.

Jeez that's a heck of a redirect chain. The :443 is an odd choice no? And the redirect to https://domain before https://www.domain . There are even two more for me. Also... inconsistent casing for the Location head

The standard convention is that midnight is the start of the day. The instant 23:59:59 is followed by 00:00:00 of the next day. The only instant that could exist would be 24:00:00. If you told me it was 24:00:05, I'd say poppycock - th

There are still a ton of time numbers kicking around. My local phone company still offers (513) 721-1700 and I have (513) 241-1010 burned into my memory from dialing it a million times as a kid playing with the phone. Plus you can hear two

I thought this at first, but then read farther and realized the flight started at 11pm on a moonless night. An unlit mountain is hard to see at night.

I wish this were more common. For some reason, employees are expected to give employers two weeks or more of notice when they quit, while employers are expected to terminate employees with 0 seconds of notice.

The same argument applies to DRM and piracy. DRM only disadvantages people who want to consume content legally. Only one person has to bypass it (be it through cryptographic or software failings or the good old fashioned analog hole ala tel

The internet is for whoever wants to send bits to each other and is willing to pay for transit to do it. The WWW might be for end users, though that seems less obvious by the day.

I love to see more amateur experimentation with radar. Another example of tech that was government lab black magic in the 1940s becoming accessible to random smart individuals with a few hundred dollars worth of lab equipment in the 2020s.

No, I meant that having a lot of debt puts you in a position to be more vulnerable to any kind of negative outcome. Intuitively, this seems to hold true across the spectrum from the personal level to the government level. If a person has a
