It can be both a craze and a technology shift. AI isn't going away, it will transform some industries. But right now it's overhyped, overfunded and due a trip back to reality.

We’re talking about multiple industries here. In streaming Netflix is dominant. In terms of movie production studio Netflix is the also-ran compared to Warner and Paramount. A purchase by Netflix would give them something they currently do

I wasn’t bowled over by the idea of Netflix ownership but a merge of Paramount and Warner seems way, way worse. In a sane political situation this would raise huge antitrust concerns but… well, here we are I guess. If it does go through I w

Money always wins out, media consolidation continues apace. I wonder what they’ll do with CNN, given what they did with CBS News? Nothing good, that’s for sure.

I think you're falling victim to survivorship bias there, or something like it. In 1940 I might have said "fusion power is possible" based entirely on what advanced psychics knowledge I had. And I would have been correct, acc

Sure, when you get rid of the timelines and the methods we'll use to get there, everyone agrees on everything. But at that point it means nothing. Yeah, AGI is possible (say the people who earn a salary based on that being true). Curin

It's exhausting to keep with mainstream AI news because of this. I can never work out if the companies are deluded and truly believe they're about to create a singularity or just claiming they are to reassure investors/convin

I'd be interested to know why those comments were flagged actually. They don't scream AI and no-one has replied calling them out as AI, etc. But the vast majority are dead.

Feels like a hyperbolic headline but I do think there’s something worth noting: AI can only use the information it’s given. War games run by actual knowledgeable people (I.e. the military) are confidential, so it can’t pull from that. How m

There's also something about the collapse in civility. Or... something. If you asked a plane full of passengers if they'd be happy to get their suitcase 5 minutes earlier even though it meant someone else lost theirs a lot of them

I think it also highlights something: better things are possible. Zero lost suitcases doesn't require magic to achieve. It just requires enough workers or enough time to make sure each worker is able to do their job successfully. Unfor

If all the effort has been spent in trying to replicate the human brain then I am comfortable saying that is a mistake. We have a tool that can tell with great accuracy how far away an object is. The suggestion that we should ignore it and

Self driving cars are not equipped with human brains so this doesn’t really make sense. “We should achieve self driving cars via replicating the human brain” strikes me as an incredibly inefficient and difficult way to solve the problem.

I do think it’s that but with a dangerous slippery slope embedded within. FB will optimize for engagement no matter what so if you linger on one political post they put among 99 friends and family posts they’ll immediately amp up the ratio.
