My read of the article is that "bikeshedding" generally covers discussions in which the energy expended vastly outweighs the gravity of the topic under discussion. There can be a correct answer to, "what color should we paint the bike shed?

I associate Apple products a lot more closely to luxury goods than the sort of socially-conscious products you mention. Apple did that (RED) promotion a while back with their products, but that is as close as they have come to putting forwa

That quote seems to be talking about the "social graph", not Facebook. Facebook pushes the "social graph" as part of their product, but I don't think they'd claim Facebook is the same thing as the graph.

I agree about the archival nature of torrents, but I was reacting to the rude insistence that "only" giving away source code wasn't enough. I hope that, in time, more credence will be given to the idea of "abandonware." Right now it's pirac

If you feel the need to own the assets, you can get Quake 2 for $2.50 from Amazon. Though I suppose it's harder to be a curmudgeon about ID if you look for solutions like that.

I also think that Lua has a perception of being an embedded-only language (which it's very good at). The biggest code bases are World of Warcraft interface modifications and other plugin architectures. The features Lua would need to be real

I've done a lot of work in Lua and haven't really found it to be an issue. As long as you stick to doing things the "lua way" (i.e. pairs / ipairs), the specific indexes matter very little. Every once in a while I'll have an, "oh yah," mome

Most CCDs extract color information using a Bayer Filter[1] over them. Each square is a pixel in the megapixel count (a 1 megapixel sensor would have 250k red, 250k blue and 500k green photo sites). Algorithms are used to get RGB values for

I think that people need to realize that politics, like any other industry, has a learning curve. It's not that Mr.Ham is unfit to win, or that he's not senatorial material, it's that he's a newbie to a very complex world. Even Obama, who h

I'm actually a huge car fan too. My friend and I drove around the south-western US during a summer in a way that would be impossible without a car. Though I take BART to work, my girlfriend drives (and it makes sense for her). I guess I was

I think the downvotes may be because you don't note the difference between saying you support a thing and actually pushing something through. It's quite easy to say you support something that will never get to the floor and score political

It seems that BMW actually built a prototype, which lets the company test out specific ideas about how to change something (in this case the surface of the car). That's very different from asking people to imagine how things will be 10 year

Though I worry about how much power Google wields, I think this is a bad example. EE and its ilk are designed to rank as high as possible on Google specifically. Their whole product was (more or less) SCO - if they could have ranked higher

You can do that sometimes...as long as your key isn't bound to a user account (Battle.net), and as long as you have the patience to get it working (mail the cds, give them your steam account password, find them a crack, etc). Some of those

I think this is one of the things that good DRM can provide the end-user that has been largely ignored by everyone. I mostly blame the industry for ignoring the possibilities, but they're exciting. You could "loan" games to people without p

I've seen this reaction when I advocate for Sublime-Text 2 (I don't use Text Mate as I want a cross-platform editor). Excellent FOSS applications exist in the space, but individuals may value what they get out of products that cost money. T

His OS stats are from December 2010, the up-to-date stats[1] show that xp is now down to about 42% and win7 is up to 37%. Not great, but hardly the stark picture he paints. http://gs.statcounter.com/#os-ww-monthly-201008-201108
