evolution (and evolution-ews, which is open source) work very well for office365. I personally only use the calendaring as read-only, but I assume it can create events. Email works fine.

They mentioned the distortion near the poles when using geohashing (which uses z-order curves), but I doubt they have many users at the North or South Pole.

Jupyter supports lots of languages (including R). RStudio is probably still nicer for working R, but I haven't done any serious analysis in R for a while now.

JupyterHub is the multi-user application which will proxy a single user application. Jupyter notebook is the default single user app, but it can be configured to use jupyterlab.

GNOME works just fine on hidpi screens. I use it on my (2013) mbp and (2015) chromebook pixel and it looks great. You do have to use wayland to get scaling across a low dpi external monitor to work, but that has been fairly painless these d

Cython is a very nice way to transition hot python paths into a C extension. The best part is that it's a python superset, so it should provide some speed up without any typing information (and can be very fast once the hot paths are a

How is this different than a chattr +c on the directory? I suppose the compress option doesn't force compression (so it will try to recompress compressed files).

Can confirm, 2015 pixel is a great relatively linux friendly linux laptop running coreboot. Until recently the sound driver wasn't in the upstream kernel, but it is in 4.9 (but still isn't perfect). But everything else is great.

I haven't setup a matrix.org server (yet), but it's looking like a good next gen IRC with good bridges into IRC and other chat services.

I currently use an SDR to capture ADS-B messages, but it can also be used for satellite images fairly easily: http://www.rtl-sdr.com/rtl-sdr-tutorial-receiving-noaa-weath...

Jupyter (IPython) notebooks aren't binary, they are JSON. Clearing output before committing in git does show reasonable diffs (including output causes way too much churn). Most of the nice stuff from RStudio is making its way into htt

Java 8 with lambdas and streams is actually fairly nice to program. It's still Java, but it is much better than it was before Java 8. Maven is complicated, but Java 9 with project jigsaw might help things out on the packaging side. I d

RPM doesn't have any bigger risk than using dpkg. You shouldn't be using either manually (unless you really know what you're doing). Using dnf/zypper/yum on the RPM side and aptitude/apt-get/whatever on th
