As of spring 2021 they actually opened up the Find My spec for third party manufacturers [1] - that’s how those electronic bikes and headphones can have built-in Find My tracking now. [1]: https://developer.apple.com/find-my

If you are logged in to your email on the device, whoever gains access can trivially reset most of your passwords though, so even if your password manager is locked, it only helps for passwords for things that don’t offer an email reset opt

Sure, it doesn't happen overnight. My point was to point out to parent that Apple is not explicitly trying to block other OS's from booting, and alternatives will become available as the systems mature.
