Why do you except Netflix here? I'm not familiar with anything unusual about their hiring, and a couple of quick searches didn't turn up anything. Has their hiring been on HN previously?

Sorry, I should have clarified - I'm thinking of a few friends in particular who would be fresh-out-of-undergrad developers coming from shared apartments where they were paying $300-$350/mo. The change from 8k debt/year to 80

As a Midwestern coder, I could definitely see peers making that mistake - 80k seems like a lot when you're used to rent in the low hundreds. That said, where are you getting 80k? I didn't see it in either the GP link or the origin

They're purely software. The article does briefly discuss attacks on ATMs and similar devices that use concealed hardware to intercept user data, but the RAM scrapers that are the main focus of the article are just pieces of software.

Just tested (using ejj.io/SOP.php), Javelin on my Note 3 isn't vulnerable.
