I've always assumed that this is how government agencies would try and interpret the situation, but I also assume that this will go all the way to the top to be properly decided. Edit: Not to mention that other countries may disagree w

I've had a bit of luck with Amazon Basics branded cables recently. They've got quite a chunky connector/cable that's lasted a lot longer than my default phone cables have.

Normally true, but if Amazon trade in high enough volume (which they do), turning up the price by pennies across the board will generate quite a large bump in profit. And whilst they are definitely in the low margin, price sensitive busine

The funny thing for me is that everyone has always said that Amazon's share price is justified because eventually "they'll turn on the profit tap" and up their margins once the market is captive. Yet, how do you tell whe

No I mean I already have two physically separate servers; one with the web service (Apache/Nginx + Rails/PHP/whatever), one with the database. The webserver handles the hashing of passwords as they come in, then sends it to

Hence why I mentioned separate servers. Even if you did screw up the database permissions and allow an injection attack to have more than just read permissions, they'd still only have access to the DB server filesystem. Unless there i

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a large proportion of database hacks are still SQL injection attacks. If you assume that the password handling code is on a webserver and the database is on a separate server, there is no reason to

There are places that got rid of lead much later than others, they also showed a corresponding later decline in crime levels. What's even more interesting is that the decline occurs regardless of criminal policy (eg. zero tolerance or

I think part of the problem is that Lisp is an incredibly broad language in terms of its capabilities. The macro system can be extremely powerful and when abused, is a nightmare to decipher. But. In the real world, I've rarely ever en

I'd be more tempted to attribute FM2014's hours played to the style of game that it is. It's very much a "spreadsheet" game in many regards - you can leave it running in the background while it plays through the si

Unions are very political in the UK don't forget. They have direct, open ties to the Labour party (eg. funding, getting to pick candidates, etc). This may not bother someone who is already a Labour voter, but if you were a Conservati

I remember a comment I heard along similar lines about Obama when he was running for president. Some people were saying that he's not actually black, etc... The simple rebuttal is: In 1950s America, which water fountain would he be m

The main thing that springs to mind is that the only way to get a half decent desktop is through extensions. I installed a whole load of useful ones about a year ago, but currently only about 1/5th of them are still working due to gno

Yeah, the extensions have really helped. The main problem there is that the extensions keep on falling out of compatibility. I have half a dozen extensions that used to work well and provided critical functionality, now they don't.
