I've been a little surprised at the success of Patreon. I kind of assumed that it would make for a nice tip for creators, but not much more. Instead there are a few webcomics that I read, taking $1000's a month (eg. SMBC at $870

True, but if I want to take VAT numbers I have to be registered for VAT anyway and then do UK quarterly filings. I'd voluntarily lose the £81k exemption in this case regardless. A VAT MOSS filing on top of that would not be too much

Yeah, I don't know whether France has a similar exemption, but in the UK currently I do not have to track or even charge VAT until the company has £81k in revenue. I don't even have to register for it. This is really handy for t

Some of them already do. I use <p10> as a style tag on some websites and firefox/chrome deal with it fine. The advantage is that old versions of IE don't, so it's a simple browser detection for the user support team.

Yep, it's a mess that's going to backfire. I'm taking the step of blocking all non-UK EU countries from purchasing. It sucks, but it's the only way I can keep my tiny little bootstrapped company afloat without having a

Yeah, it's always interesting comparing drinking laws. In the UK we've tried to crackdown on underage drinking quite a bit in the past decade or two. But it hasn't really worked particularly well. Part of it is that in the

Can't say this enough. Someone tries to make a funny little poem about variable naming and someone else tries to derail it into a debate about gender. Skewed priorities there I think!

Yeah, the idea of F# on Linux is very exciting. Visual studio has a lot to bring to the table, a lot of things that I've missed since I stopped working at an MS shop. I used to do a lot of work with F# and MSSQL, and have missed some

I quite liked the types section, particularly the bit about making illegal states unrepresentable so you can enforce business rules, eg. validating email addresses. One of the things I'm always thinking when people talk about the merit

Yep, C-q is also useful when you need to comment out part of a multiline sexp without doing a block select and C-; Otherwise paredit will helpfully move the comment to a newline to avoid breaking the balance ;)

I don't think I've seen the phrase "ramen profitable" mentioned for years now. I remember a few years back it used to be the mantra here, is it taught at YC anymore?

I wonder whether this is just a speculative suit based on past performance with the LIBOR scandal, or whether they actually have some sort of smoking gun. The article doesn't really mention either way.

I was about to say the very same. There are so many beautiful pieces of religious music, it would be a crying shame to dismiss them simply because you don't believe in the subject matter. Afterall, most of the history of the human rac

Here's the gist of it for UK startups as I understand it: 1) If you're already VAT registered, this isn't really adding much work. Just track IP address and credit card address for the sale (you probably are anyway). Your a
