This reminds me of one of my biggest facepalm-ing moments when I first started using Lisp. I needed to serialise some data to disk, it was all in a list form - (list (a b) (c d)) kinda thing. So I thought to use XML format to store it on

Milton Keynes is probably the worst place I've ever been to in the UK. No easy walking around town. All chain stores, very few independent shops. No hailable black cabs for some reason, everything involved calling a minicab and waiti

This is a big improvement for me. The inline help in particular is much better than the previous links to the knowledge base.

Halting problem perhaps? Even if you put in safeguards, an exhaustive search could still be unacceptably slow. You can never tell when a pathological case might arise.

If they IPO'd, Bezos would be under humungous pressure to give it all out as dividends. Given his business beliefs, it'll never happen. It's not like they have cashflow problems anyway.

I've taken to mostly using my upvote as a means of reverting other peoples bad downvotes. I think they should just take downvoting away entirely.

Yeah I was thinking much the same. I really do believe that we should just remove the downvote button entirely, too many people abusing it for the wrong reasons. An entirely upvote-oriented site would work reasonably well. You could stil

It was no.3 that eventually killed Gentoo for me. Took a three week holiday and it must've been a busy release period or something, because when I came back I had an unholy hell of packages needing updating. The worst part was there w

Ah, I didn't realise they had tiered pricing, I thought it was just $2500 across the board. I guess I must read the articles a bit more closely. I can't imagine that this will go well for the .sucks registrar in court - looks li

The possible upside is that if it's trademarked, no-one else should be to register the domain name either. However, that all depends on the rigourousness of the registrar...

I think it won't be long before someone gets sued over a .sucks or .porn style domain. Then we'll see what happens in court. Due to the nature of the internet it'll be a debate fought multiple times internationally as well,

I always thought these sayings were more about what people get upto in the evenings - that's usually when parties, drinking, etc. happen. Therefore if you can get up early, you probably haven't been out all night partying, ergo y

Yeah I've said that for years. Google have a serious tendency to just announce products, push them out the door and then forget they ever existed. Then 3 years later we hear about them being closed down (due to lack of traction) and

I think you've hit the nail on the head there. A lot of GDS's mandate revolved around modern agile techniques and just doing it. This doesn't exactly mesh very well with traditional civil service slow bureaucracy. The civ

Bear in mind the Register enjoy taking contrary opinions just for the sake of it. I've found that most of the Gov.UK stuff has actually been very good. A welcome redesign of a lot of godawful, confusing old websites that had no consis
