Shameless plug: have a listen to my new album “Melodic Guitar Music.” It’s 10 original guitar instrumentals. Sort of a mashup between Django Reinhardt (gypsy jazz), Chet Atkins-style fingerpicked guitar and Beatles melodicism. https:/

Hi, one of the creators of Django here (and of the admin specifically). It was definitely not intended to be ugly — the first version was designed by Wilson Miner, a great designer. In fact, an argument could be made that a key reason for D

Very cool! Have you tried it on old 78rpm recordings, or is that a different type of noise than you’re aiming to remove? [update] I've tried it on an old 78rpm recording and it successfully removed the hiss — but it was a bit too aggre

You are not alone! It’s indeed very bad UX on the part of Apple. I run a website with music education tools and we had to make a dedicated help page for this particular annoyance: https://www.soundslice.com/help/en/

(Former Chicago resident here) Higher parking rates means fewer people driving, which is a long-term win. I highly doubt this was the top priority for the people who set the Chicago parking rates, but it's actually a good thing for the

Hello, I lead the creation of the Soundslice music scanning tool! My biased opinion is that we get much better results than other tools, even though it's still in beta and doesn't support the full range of notations we aim to supp

This is excellent. The path from "George Barnes (Musician)" to "Django Reinhardt" somehow managed to pass through Hysterectomy, 5-Bromouracil, Glucuronidation and Port Bannatyne (Scotland). Kudos for some creative coding

I stopped doing this when a person here in Amsterdam bluntly responded: "You Americans! That's all you ever talk about is work!" Haven't asked anybody an open-ended "So what do you do" in the five years since,

We just launched a beta music scanning feature at Soundslice a few months ago: https://www.soundslice.com/sheet-music-scanner/ It’ll accept images and PDFs of music, extracting the notes, rhythms, etc., so you can play

In 2004, the website All Music Guide did a horrible redesign. I was so irritated that I created a Firefox extension that did only one thing — it made All Music Guide a bit more useable. To my knowledge, this was the first "site-specifi

On the other end of the spectrum: here in Amsterdam some of the canal houses deliberately use smaller windows for the top floors, to give the impression that the homes are taller (and more prestigious). The way it was explained to me is tha

Yes, for two reasons: * The software: Medium somehow managed to make majority-plain-text articles slow to consume in modern web browsers, negating decades' worth of web browser optimizations. * The culture: Medium is overrun with self-

This is a seductive notion, but it's indeed possible for a tech company to understand how a single piece of data goes through its systems. It might take a while, and it might involve weeks of code spelunking and dozens of conversations

Sorry, I’m not seeing how this overengineered solution adds any benefit…? If it’s a mostly static site, just use Django or Rails and be done with it. SEO becomes a non-issue and your code stays in a single (server-side) language.

Interesting — can I assume you're not on a high-pixel density (aka "retina") screen? We've experimented with forcing staff lines to start on a new pixel, but that can result in an overly digital look.

I’m one of the creators of Django and I’d personally never write a class-based view. It requires too much knowledge on part of the developer and is generally an abstraction for the sake of abstraction. Simple functions are much clearer!
