Depending on the kind of heating system you have and the temperature differences you talk about it can be cheaper to heat the house to a constant temperature (because your heating can run more efficiently under lower load).

The problem with carbon capture from air is the low carbon concentration. Try to do the math for how much air you need to process to get even one barrel of oil worth of hydrocarbons from a DAC process.

A long time ago I slogged through a complete edition of Moby Dick and found it really difficult to read. There are many good passages but they are hidden between endless pages about things that don’t move the plot forward and are only inter

I understand your argument, but I feel that good development practices are essentially a company culture question. Putting additional burden on the engineers does not sit well with me as in my experience many engineers already care more abo

There already are areas where such standards exist, eg safety critical applications in aviation. Arguably the defect rate there _is_ lower, but I still think that this method for achieving this is quite inefficient. And I think that writing

In practice this would mean that you need to show conformance to some kind of security process. The actual outcome of that process is of secondary importance as long as you can show that you’re compliant. Very carefully written process docu

Where in the brain do visual hallucinations happen? I remember hearing that we can crudely reconstruct images from live scans of the brain. Does that work with hallucinations?

Imo you learn to add not for the skill of adding, but for the skill of understanding and applying algorithms. Adding is just a simple example.

Farm land has less healthy soil than if you stop tilling, fertilizing and pesticides and put solar panels on it. I also think you’re overestimating the area needed to cover our energy needs.

If we reduce land use for food production, it's not like that land will turn into a parking lot. Other plants will grow there, hopefully with richer biodiversity than an agricultural monoculture.

Which combustion engines have good efficiency in real world scenarios? Diesel can do reasonably well under optimal conditions, but in real world driving it’s much less. A small car uses 5l/100km, so about 50kWh. An EV needs well under

Negative mutations can survive for a long time if they're not too bad. For example the loss of vitamin C synthesis is clearly bad in situations where you have to survive without fresh food for a while, but that comes up so rarely that
