So far I have seen a lot more production systems with a bus factor of zero than production systems with a bus factor greater one.

Look at the number of planned reactors and the number of reactors likely reaching EOL. France plans to build fewer than fifteen new plants (delivery date tbd). If they started building all of them today half of their fleet would be fifty ye

They don’t even plan enough replacements to keep generation constant as aging plants are decommissioned

Renewables are non dispatchable and thus have a hard time picking up variable demand. They’re very good at providing free energy on sunny or windy days and are increasingly forcing nuclear plants to reduce output during those times, directl

If it were solely about pushing the limits of the body, cyclists wouldn’t obsess about aerodynamics nearly as much and competitions would be about average watts over n-minutes or something like that.

And still even China is adding as much solar as their total nuclear capacity on a yearly basis.

Net metering is of course nice for consumers but it’s not sustainable for the grid operators.

Batteries for load shifting a few hours mitigate that quite a bit and are getting cheaper fast.

I find that surprising since most plastics you would make glasses from should block uv.

That is a problem human researchers face too.

In the end we're still making steam and running a turbine. Just the steam turbine part of the power plant has a hard time competing with solar in sunny locations.

Why would you only assume 1000 cycles? Is the chemistry that bad? The LFP battery on my balcony is rated for 5000 cycles iirc.

I don’t think the argument is „batteries are getting more expensive“, the argument is that manufacturers will start maximizing profits once they have sufficiently handicapped the competition.

For E-Bikes at least communication between the engine and the battery pack is encrypted and you can't replace either without the manufacturer's consent.

Or a suitable petri dish. I would die pretty quickly in most environments on earth, not to mention other places in the universe.

At least some of your cells are fine living without the others as long as they’re provided with an environment with the right kind of nutrients.

The human experience is also several degrees removed from the „real“ world. I don’t think sensory chauvinism is a useful tool in assessing intelligence potential.

That might be true, but it doesn’t matter for the buying decision of the individual consumer.

It’s an issue right now because we lack the ability to steer demand. Connect a few million electric cars and heat pumps to the grid and allow the grid operators to talk to them and the issue is much less severe.

I really don’t think that that’s the bottleneck. Peak demand is much higher than average demand. There is a lot of leeway in moving around domestic demand

Reliability does not require determinism. If my system had good behavior on inputs 1-6 and bad behavior on inputs 7-10 it is perfectly reliable when I use a dice to choose the next input. Randomness does not imply complete unpredictability

It’s a complicated engineering system with high capex to drive a steam turbine. It’s hard to compete with something like that in a market increasingly driven by intermittent periods of essentially free energy. Too cheap to meter didn’t work
