Yup, they are not "appliances", they are worse than that. My toaster doesn't care or complain at what I toast, my oven doesn't want $99 pizza baking license nor it doesn't want me to pay extra just because I cooked

They don't. So stop paying them and using their devices. Too hard ? Well, they know that, which is why they know you will pay regardless.

I wonder if that could just be extrapolated from cost to make silicon wafer of required grade. Surely the amount of chemicals and power used would be similar per mm2 of silicon processed, regardless of whether it is big CPU or a bunch of sm

Well I don't know much about Linode customer service because it all worked fine for 14 years... only thing I got is "your node is going to be migrated in X days, or press this key to migrate it now" few times when they were u

Pay someone. But if you really want. PowerDNS + MySQL replication for the "slaves" then put slaves in few different places with good bandwidth. Instant updates, very bulletproof.

Not that many homes are built with basements nowadays. Water to water heat pump with pipes being directly under building's basement might've been pretty neat solution tbh, if you're digging for basement anyway might as well

Well, even if you assume 100% reliable supply of whatever kind of energy (gas, power etc.) your system needs, the heating device can still fail. Having some kind of backup in places where it can get really cold is always a good thing IMO
