Unlike Eich, Rice went far beyond simply holding beliefs and making donations. She held real power and used it in unconscionable ways. Given the current climate, I find it incredible that a cloud storage company would be involved with someo

If you pick "peer reviewed research" you probably never held your own newborn child in your arms, promising you'd do anything to protect them, and secretly wishing they never grow old. And perhaps you overestimate the strengt

To prevent fiscal fraud. Spanish government has a big problem with people not paying tax (partially because the tax rules in some cases are completely absurd).

I don't have time right now to read all that, but since I was referring generally to network effects, and not specifically Metcalf's Law, the paper probably validates my comment above.

Agreed, but the regulatory effect is potentially bigger. In many places Whatsapp will not simply be able to roll out telephony services without the OK of the local regulator. I expect them to dis-activate VOIP for many countries initially,

Not wishing to harp on (honest), but we just launched some very real competition. We've spent the last 2 years polishing our app which allows you to make VOIP calls out to US, UK and Canadian numbers for free. You even get assigned y

This is a real headache. You can either send all the messages (and info/queries) to all logged-in devices, or you select just the most recently used. In the first case, the user gets messages repeated. In the latter, there's the r

Except Whatsapp has a very strong network effect that's difficult to replicate (the other person must also have the app). That's why we designed Upptalk to interoperate with standard telephony services like SMS and SIP.
