We have three PhDs / MBAs. Can certainly be an advantage. People who come from the best school's will probably have a much easier time raising money than a company of college grads from run of the mill universities.

I think your analysis is a bit harsh but hits on a good point. If we give people benefits forever it doesn't make sense to work. Ie if you lost a higher paying job. You will make more taking unemployment than getting a lower paying job.

I think it goes back to our protestant religious roots. The church does not like gambling(for obvious reasons).

Java is "verbose" and I'm real happy to see other languages target the JVM. It will make it very easy to convince "corporate america" to adopt them in the future. In no way is Java a PITA. It's got it's quirks but it remains one of the best

It's like summer school. You can cut all year and go to summer school for 3 months and get the credit for the class. It's a band aid. You will be 10x times smarter if you finish 4 years of high school as opposed to dropping out in 10th grad

Clojure runs on the JVM. If there is one thing the JVM has to much of it's application servers. Jetty(non blocking), Glassfish for enterprise apps. Tomcat, websphere, weblogic, apache geronimo...etc. Why not just conform to those standards

Without investors or a nice endowment it's hard to work the years needed to create a nice "r&d" product. If I launched twitter the first server bill would have put me out of business. There is a balance between making something cool and

Singletons could be reset using a beforeclass(Reset data before a test suite is ran) or beforetest(Reset data before a test is run) type method. This is built into test frameworks for java, python and others.
