It's actually not about having "earned" it; it's not meant to be a token of having completed the degree, or having been stupendously good at some technical piece of work. It's meant as a reminder to the obligation you have to society not

This organizes a lot of thoughts I've had regarding the economic history of the 20th century. It seemed that something really changed in patterns of invention and investment somewhere in the late 70s, whereby - as Peter notes - big ideas a

As I've rapidly discovered, trying to calculate aggregate stats over the basis of Poisson arrivals... is a pain. To work out anything interesting, you end up studying piecewise-deterministic markov processes in more detail than you'd wish.

On the other hand, this issue reminds me of Peter Thiel's TedX talk, where he makes the argument that real technological invention may be slowing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOB7nezuQ7g I agree assisting people to reach the airport on

Regarding usabili.ca, the domain you're using... If you're "three geeks in Tehran", you really shouldn't be using a Canadian domain. Unless you're Canadians, or are incorporated within Canada. Just saying.

Indeed. There's even a name for the anti-pattern: "nanoservice". http://soa.dzone.com/news/soa-anti-pattern-nanoservices

Where is this useful? The bus speed across to the GPU is so slow, I thought it was only meaningful for near-autonomous operations.

Thank you for posting this on HN! This is exactly the kind of underreported bleeding-edge engineering I hope to discover on places like HN. It's very easy for mainstream journalists to jump on new technologies once they've been developed,

The author's sudden and poorly supported conclusion doesn't really fit. Because people with bachelor's degrees have the least unemployment, it is imperative we pass a GI Bill to ensure everyone gets a bachelor's degree?! He's getting the c

In fact, businesses (companies) are not permitted to donate to political parties in Canada. And this same "neo-con" government has lowered the maximum personal donation from $5000 per person to $1000 per person. If anything, this has encou

The parallel vs serial queuing problem is very well established within the operations research community. And, IIRC, it's not that there's much impact to average performance, but rather that the variation (sigma) drops by a factor of n.

The thing I've found about message queues is that it's pretty unimportant what platform they're based on. I used to be tempted to go with ActiveMQ "because it runs on the JVM", but that turns out to be pretty irrelevant. No matter what you
