And the regulations are captured by the companies who much prefer no competition. So we’re screwed by BOTH the corporations and the government. We need new laws, and smaller companies.

I think in-sourcing management expertise to the public agencies would save a lot of money. Management consultants are expensive and their incentives are in conflict with public projects.

If a flat org is communism, what is a top-down org? A dictatorship or authoritarianism?

Have you tried setting mem_sleep to deep? This helped on my Thinkpad until I got a new enough kernel that allowed the system to fully enter C10 state. https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/admin-guide/pm

Cicadas can be harmful to trees from the egg laying. I’ve even heard of extreme cases where a young tree doesn’t survive. https://wtop.com/local/2021/06/the-cicadas-might-be-gone-but...

Seems like your reason to be here is to point the finger at China while ignoring the problems in the US. Personally, I'll focus on the US since it's a massive contributor to global warming and is the place I have the most leverage

I’m not hand waving China’s emissions away, and explicitly said they can and should do more. If and when they decide to deal with the problem, I expect they’ll make a lot more progress than we have. We’ll just have to agree to disagree that

What makes you think the US gives a shit either? Companies have spent the last forty years moving manufacturing out of the country because it lets them profit a bit more. They don’t give a shit about climate change unless they can make more

Who is to blame for outsourced manufacturing then? If one country consumes a vast amount of goods from another, are they not also accountable for that other country’s emissions?

It seems like it’s too late for technology, given that there are no large scale solutions. Technology also has a tendency to cause its own, new, set of problems, which can be worse than problems they’re trying to solve. It’s not a panacea,

Fair enough, I was wrong so deserve the downvotes. Very few European countries are innocent when it comes to taking land that wasn’t theirs.

This post confused me because of all the large boxes linking to other articles by the author. They really break the flow of the article and seem to take up even more space than the unique content in this one.

They didn’t enslave people because they were racist, they enslaved people because it was effectively free labor. Sure, they chose Africans because they were racist and thought them savages, but that isn’t why the institution of slavery exis

I filter mine as well, and use Fastmail’s snooze to only have them show up once a day. I used to use rss heavily, but it has been many years since I regularly checked a client. At least with email delivery I don’t miss them.

Isn’t it physically inefficient and wasteful to have multiple companies running fiber through a neighborhood? Why not run one set of fiber and let companies compete for the customers on those lines?

Thank you for this. I don’t see how we make any significant changes to our trajectory without accepting a “lower” quality of life than what we have now. We need to localize, we need to rid ourselves of continuous consumption of useless junk

There are multiple different types of coops. Here’s a good breakdown: https://ncdc.unl.edu/typescooperatives.shtml You’re correct that financing is harder compared to VC funding, and likely involves personal or bank loans.

I agree that adding docker to a Go dev setup is not worth it, but I think commenter was asking for a docker image for running it. In that case, I’d say that docker could be worth it for the end user.

I agree with your final point, but China resource usage is partially attributable to American consumption. We can’t export all our manufacturing to other countries and then point at them for causing climate change.
